Q:

.257 QUESTIONS!

Good day all- I have a few questions about a .257 build… What would be a good barrel length to use? I’d like to keep the rifle handy, and it’s going to be shrouded… Im thinking anywhere between 24″-28″ would be okay. I’m of course going with a TJ liner, but which one do I get? the 1:14″ or the 1:10″ twist? Would 1000 cc’s be alright? I’m going to have two 500 cc tanks linked together. They’re both 3k psi though… would this be a alright set up? I know most of you guys building on a AF rifle are using the larger 4.5k tanks, so I wasn’t sure. Thoughts??

Caboose,

So much depends on your power plant, basically what bullet weight your wanting to launch and how fast.

I have two 36 inch TJ barrels that I use on my Haley 27, one is 1-14 and one is 1-10.

With the 1-14 I have a problem with some bullets in excess of 100 grains and being able to stabilize them, my 1-14 barely stabilized the 105 grain Hoch and is not even close for the 100 grain NOE, Tofazfou does stabilize the Lyman/Ideal 100 grain Spitzer with his 1-14 though.

I use the 1-10 to mainly shoot the 100 grains and I get 985 FPS to 1000 FPS, if you have a need for shooting 100 grains and the power plant to launch them it is a good compromise.

However I doubt your going to be able to push a 100 grainer out that fast with a 24 to 28 inch barrel, so I would go with a 1-14 inch twist, and shoot 70 to 80 grain bullets and meet yourself in the middle and go with a 26 inch barrel. You should be able to get 1000 FPS or better with the 257420 with that length. My 1-10 does pretty good with the lighter bullets, but the 1-14 is the King for lighter bullets and is just a touch more accurate with them than the 1-10.

Your air supply of 1000 cc sounds great, I don’t know what your going to build this on, but sounds like it may be a AF Platform with a tank under the barrel and a line connected to the tank on the butt ala Leopard or Monster perhaps?

Hope this helps.

Regards,
