35 types of pellets tested through Cricket
So I’m getting to know my Cricket, and now that I have the trigger dialed in, I’m really starting to enjoy her. Today, I started the process of testing pellets and I thought I would share the results. Each group is a cluster of 5 shot from 25 yards off a bag. There were some clear preferences asnwell as some pellets that sprayed so bad, that I stopped after 2-3 shots.
Some extremely good performers were the Newboy Seniors, Barracuda Match 5.51 head, Falcon Accuracy Plus, JSB Exact Jumbo RS, JSB Exact Jumbo Heavy, Air Arms Diabolo Field Heavy, JSB Exact Jumbo, and the Air Arms Diabolo Field.

AA pellets are more consistent. In 177.
I ordered 12 tins of JSB heavies, at random six tins were good (sub 1/2″ groups at 40 yards) and the other six were crap (1 1/2″+ groups at 40 yards). So far I have not found a tin of AA pellets (12 tins tested) that produced groups larger than 3/4″ at 40 yards, some groups were sub 3/8″ at 40 yards.
All pellets in 24 tins were checked for bent skirts (24×500=12,000 pellets hand sorted).
Whatever AA has JSB do for their tins it makes a difference. I have a feeling there are fewer AA dies and JSB mixes all their pellets from all their dies. Or certain dies are mixed with other dies, there can be a few different explanations as to why half the tins I purchased were SHIT.
Since this test I have ordered another 12 tins of AA and will test them as I did the others.
I will no longer buy the red label JSB heavies at 50% more in price than the AA tins (JSB heavies $15, AA heavies $10).
I shoot field target nationally in the USA so my range is 10-60 yards.
O.K. Maybe they do have fewer dies or something. IĀ“m not familiar with neither JSB nor AA in .177 cal. but i see no difference in group sizes AA vs. JSB 18gr. 22 cal.
I’m planning a range day in the near future where I will test the better pellets at 50 and 100 yards. I’ll update this thread when I do. Steve

I have found in 177 that pellets start to show their true colors at 40 or more yards. I have been working with JSB and AA heavies and found that from tin to tin they both shoot great at 30 yards but start to shoot different at 40.
Minimum test distances for each caliber should be:
177cal @ 45+
22cal @ 65+
25cal @ 85+
Microsalmo have you tested the newboy seniors out further than 25 yards?
Missed the 25 yrd part. I thought it was shot at 50 yrds.
– and before jumping to conlusions it would be nice to know if this has been shot with a sub 12 ft/lbs gun or a gun running on full power. In the latter group, almost all PCP’s would perform at that level or better at 25 yds. A totally different story though if shot with a UK- NON-FAC rifle……. š
I havenĀ“t seen one high-end airgun that didnĀ“t perform with JSB pellets. And ,as you all probably know , the Air Arms pellets are just that – JSBĀ“s as well. Some say they go thru one more select process but i doubt that. Simply JSBĀ“s in AA tin. Nice group BTW !

… Don’t want to forget this group of five through the same hole at 25 yards. Let’s give credit where it’s due. I shot this a few weeks back with the JSB Jumbo Heavy 18 gr.

Any high dollar (around $2000) pcp should be ashamed if not capable of this kind of shot groups at 25 yards, benchrested.
