Makes me talk funny…

SECoda, why don’t you try helium if you want more fps?

Yeah, my cast 25 acp penetrate like there is no tomorrow.

I use a Merrel crosbow target as a backstop to pin targets on for my 36 yard range. When I shoot a 5 shot group at that range, the things shoot thru the Merrel target after about the 3rd shot and then I can hear them bouncing off doug firs on their way to ground.

Nothing that looks like a pellet or an arrow at 500 fps for that matter does that.

My Ranger 45 will shoot thru that target, but then your putting 600 FPE on the nose of a 45 caliber swc to achieve that feat.

As a result I would not dream of shooting a crow out the top of a doug fir like I do with the Kings in my underwear in the morning light. I mean I like my neighbors and all, but have no intention of giving them and their attorney everything I own or will ever own.

Yeah who skippy, I imagine Mr HP does charge a arm and a leg for those 22 and 25 caliber HP’s, and damn well he should, what a bitch they must be to cast. I considered having my 25 acp mold HPed but then decided against it, I have enough trouble with rotor cup injuries doing pushups, without seeing how far I can throw that damn mold.

If you want HP’s and Mr HP will cast them, you should probably thank your lucky stars he does and pay the price.

But then do you really need them?

Do you need an expanding bullet on crows and squirrels, if in fact they really do upset that much?

I cast the 25 acp bullets, but I am retired and have little else to do in my spare time, but I truely do like to cast bullets when it all works well and love the fact that I made them myself.

Add in the fact I have killed some huge animals with a lead bullet in the 22 caliber bore, by the time I was 12 I had close to 40 head of cattle I had killed for butcher in the old mans pasture with a 22 lr by shooting for an imginary x drawn from horn to eye, not to mention one hell of a lot of deer and coyotes all shot with solids because they penetrated better.

So far on this 25 kick I have just under 200 bucks in a mold and a set of used RCBS handles off ebay and the alloy for 1000 bullets I have cast and shot this month. And 200 bucks is about what it costs to change calibers if you have everything else which I already had t ocast and size for the Ranger 45.

But you also need a place to cast those bullets, somewhere dry so you don’t have to wear a hockey mask in public and somewhere with adequate ventelation so your unborn children don’t have to wear hockey masks in public when they get old enough to hoble like Quazimoto into public all hunch backed and club footed and all.

Then you have to break the mold in and learn the ins and outs of that particular mold. You have to learn how to fill it so as not to get wrinkles and you have to learn how to keep the bases from having accuracy robbing flaws. Almost all of it deals with the pressure the lead flows into the sprue plate holes and the temperture of the lead vrs the temperture of the mold.

And if it is a hp it tends to add dimesionaly to the mix in that you have to contemplate the temperture of the pin that goes into the bullet nose and what that does to the HP.

I have never seen a MR hp 25 bullet first hand, I have seen pictures of them, but I have purchaced his 45 caliber hp’s and to me he sells some bullets that I would not shoot in matches, but then I am sort of particular bastard when it comes to what I used to shoot at a match.

When I launched a 45 caliber bullet over 93 grains of swiss #2 in a case I had indexed three times and a bullet I indexed 4 times in the sizing and reloading dies, and it has to travel 1000 yards out of a $5000.00 engraved Sharps Borschardt with a Kreiger barrel, being retired and all, and having the time to weed out excuses, it had to be perfect in order for me to sleep the night before a match.

But if I were selling them to put bread on the table, my criteria for what goes in the mail and what doesn’t would be vastly different, especially when I have to put big bore air rifles on the auction block to pay the heating bill if the things do not sell.

Now I have seen piles of HP bullets that Cedric has cast from molds worked over by a fellow that is just down the road from me, they were damn good looking bullets, and either Cedric has been saving the perfect ones to pile up for that picture, or Eric has learned to make a better hp mold, perhaps…

I have also heard he alters Bob Vogels molds, so maybe the history and the facts as to what it takes to make a HP mold have changed since uncle Elmers times and that damn 330 grain HP mold he wrote such glaring reports about, maybe… but not enough for me to fuck up a $117.00 mold by spending another $100.00 on it and risking another rotor cup injury by getting pissed off and throwing the damn thing in frustration.

Now to me, there is only one other thing harder than what I have been describing and that is…..

Getting Jerry to buy all the stuff to start casting 22 and 25 caliber HP’s so Timmy can get pissed off at Jerry and throw that mold at him. 😆

Did I miss anything Jerry?

LOL I am looking for the “golden” cast bullet without doing the casting myself. Your Surefires do pretty well but I was looking for a little bit lighter stuff too so I can get around 1000+ fps with an 18″ barrel for the field (40-50 grain but cast because the BCs and down range energy is so much better). Wide mouth cast HPs have their accuracy challenges too.

On the cost I have no idea how much harder an HP is. With these relatively soft slugs getting enough damage isn’t really an issue (unless you are penetrating hog skull). The HPs are more a novelty to me. If they mess with accuracy than they are a negative.

One issue with these cast bullets I am really noticing though is the large amount of down range energy which means they are more like a 22 lr than a really fast pellet and not really back yard friendly unless you have an Ozark foothill in your back yard. 🙂 I did some shooting with the Predators and 6-Ring SFs in an open field and the Surefires easily travel 2-3x farther. Kind of scary.

SE,

I’m not trying to give you shit or keep you from experimenting. Hell, trying different things is part of the joy of this hobby!

I was just making a point about cost and maybe venting a little. I think Bob makes some fine looking bullets but looking good and shooting good are different and given the cost, I expect the HPs to shoot great or just be an experiment that was tried.

I’ve had a good number of shooters post their results with the slugs here and most have been positive. It’s pretty rare to see .25 HP groups or any other non-standard .25s groups posted. I’m sure there are some great groups out there and some wonderful gun/custom .25 bullet combos out there but they sure do keep quiet.

I just like to complain.

quote SECoda:

I guess the main problem I see with the MRHP bullets is the price.

Surefire slugs shoot pretty well and are 100 for $15 for the 62 grain 6-ring. I pay Missouri bullet $39 per 500 for std 45 ACP.

MRHP are $25 per 50 for a 43 grain slug.

THat is real;y high in anyones book.

HP bullets are a PIA to make, I’ve got some HP molds in larger sizes and if we get an order for those, we charge for the extra work too. For the shooter who has to cough up the dough, the questions before ordering might be; do I have as good as or better a chance of hitting my target and, will a HP perform well enough to make a difference?

I went to adventures in airguns and priced some HPs. For 100 43grHPs shipped with the 3 day select option (equivelent to Priority mail 2-3 day delivery) the bill comes to $62.17. That’s $22.00 per 50 plus 18.17 for shipping.

70gr HPs came out to $72.17 shipped.

If you buy 100 slugs wether they be 62, 71 or 88gr from Surefire Casting, they will cost you $25 and be shipped via priority mail, be insured and have delivery confirmation.

300 of any size slug will cost a total of $60 to your door.

300 70gr HPs will cost you $182.30 which is $2.30 more than 1100 71gr 7 rings would cost delivered…

Damn! Those HPs must be freaking awesome! 🙄

Given the recent pictures of long range headshots using slugs, I kinda doubt the HPs could kill things any deader but maybe at a range where velocity allows some meaningful expansion and accuracy is not really critical…the HPs are probably worth every dollar!

i have had good luck with them and like his work. I think you will like them also for hunting small game from squirrel to coyote because they are too expensive for plinking.

Bob is sending me a sampler of different .25 cast bullets to try in the following weights. 35, 43, 53, 58 grains. He also acknowledges the chokes being finicky and the bullet diameters barrel specific. All we can do is try them.

Yes the sumatra and the 707 II. They are both powerful and really accurate and works well with slugs. The barrels are .253.

quote roachcreek:

So many people seem to think the EJ’s are just not well made.

I have had an interest in gertting a 25 sumatra, just to shoot cast bullets in because I would like to be cast bullet exclusive.

WHat kind of performance are you getting? What is the length of the cylinder, and what do the barrel and cylinder slug out at.

Roachcreek

does shinsung/ career make a .25? think thatd be better for slugs, similar power and a very fast twist to stabilize…(1:9, i think…)

Never mind I need .457 or .458.

I agree with that are the 45 ACP bullets lead cast from Missouri bullet? How do they shoot and what size and grain are they?

.251 is what works in my barrel. I tried .250 and they are not as accurate. I learned after 21 years in the infantry that I like to shoot more than play with the technical issues. I have had good success with getting my rifles to shoot for me. I have a friend that is working out that stuff and I just test them and tell him the results and he figures out how to get what I’m looking for. He was the senior instructor at the sniper school and works there now as a civilian after we retired. But be assured I will post what we come up with that works and maybe get some samples out to some of you you to put to the test.
