Q:

.457 Talon

Many of you know i mess around with some bigbore stuff in the talon frames….

this is my latest project, a 30″ DAQ barrel in .457

Barrel is mounted like most AF barrels allthough with just one bushing

Valve is home made in an attempt to make the most power i possibly can

and heres the video clip of it being assembled….and fired

its just a few FPE shy of reaching my goal of 500 fpe, but this is at 3000 psi, im shure if i fill to 3200-3500 psi i will produce alot more…valve travel is .140″

i see alot of posts….i have been working alot of hours lately (real work that pays 🙂

i broke the 800 fps barrier for the 405 grain, and the round ball got to 1102 fps….so i guess another record ;-)…..405 grain hit 580FPE…totally insane…which got me even crazier…and i want to break 600 fpe

Butcher…thanks for the info…i will zero it at 50 which is whats available at the range…now that you went and did the math and confirmed it…thats going to be it

what would optimal be for a roundball at 1000-1100 fps, im shooting some soft roundballs, they come in a red package in .457 ?

and youp those heavy rounds looses very little energy compared to pellets….its a dangerous gun for sure…

Tube used is a 6 cell maglite…..they come in a lot of colors….anodized nicely….just needs the head cut off, a plug made….and the endcap drilled…and your all set…i currently have 3x#8 screws holding it in place…i tried #6 screws but they just bend all to hell

did some stuff to the rifle a couple of weeks ago…to help on different stuff

frame endcap in steel….nice and heavy for less recoil and steadyness.

new breech in free machining steel…the aluminium one blew the oring out the side….posetive thing is steel is nice and sturdy…negative its so heavy that when the valve slams to a closed position…the breech carrys too much enertia, and actually jumps off the tophat 😯 leading to a nasty blow of air in the shooters face

breech cocking handle modded so it can now lock into frame and avoid the nasty airblast….gave about 20-30 fps with roundball extra

valve got an extra oring to seal it better…turned out it wasnt a problem after all as the air wasnt comming from the valve but from the barrel…see above (and video)

front grip removed….plastic broke and screw was pulled through…have to find a solution later….running out of time before the hog hunt…tomorrow cousin arrives…sunday or monday going to the range to zero the last time, and give cousin a chanche to shoot the rifle he is going to be using a couple of times before the hunt…

Tuesday the toyota gets pointed towards OK…and 1700 miles and we should be there….thats 3 days to get there…rest in motel…and be at the ranch at noon friday…yeeehaw…im so excited !

Cygnus I was just thinking to myself today that I have never seen roundball do over 1000fps no matter the guns fpe and you went and blew that out of the water!! What size roundball were you using?
What kind of 230grainers did you use? I have a ton of 230grain MaxiBalls I will be bringing with a bunch of other designs.
Still wondering just what kind of range this beast Cygnus has created has?
Let’s say Cygnus has his scope set up 2 inches above the bore. A 405grainer with a muzzle velocity of 788fps will be going 761fps packin’ 521fpe at 50 yards.
If he zero’s that load at 45 yards, he will stay within .34 and .64 of an inch high between 15 and 45 yards. When aiming at a deer-sized animal he could aim at the upper-shoulder/spine and not have to worry about any holdover out to 75 yards easily. At 75yards the 405grainer is still traveling 748fps carrying 503fpe. Holy crap. 😯

I envy your barrel and power output. I’m going to try that valvesetup on my .266! What kind of tube did you use for your shroud on this beast. Mine almost blew appart on my .30 caliber due to endpressure in the shroud. Someone calculated it to be almost 180 bar! Don’t think it would reach that but it’s a lot!

Marc

way to go cyg, seems there is no stopping you now.wana see a big DEAD hog now.

That’s awesome!! You not only broke the 500fpe barrier but SMASHED it!! Congrats Cyg!!

Now go shoot a squirrel…. 😆

tank to 250 bar
788.08 fps with 405 grain …thats 558.665 fpe
second shot was 1056.83 with 141 roundball…thats 351 fpe
thirds shot was a 230 grain that went 897.79 fps…thats 411 FPE

i think i have produced the most powerfull Talon ever

Very impressive power….any idea on accuracy.

Is that the stongest AF to date?

i havent really cronied several shots yet….but theres 3 real good shots for sure, no matter which ammo i use…..

if im shooting roundball i would guess 5-10 good shots, since they use less air

the return spring in the valve is what decides the power curve… and i have yet to experiement with that

im only going for 2 powerfull shots right now….one for the killing shot and one followup if necersary….but the valve will continue to work down to about 100bar (i havent had it dump yet)

nice work cyg no wonder they squarrills don,t move after u hit them lol how many shot,s do u get a bottle ? 😀

Nice work. I bet that would tear up those squirells…LOL

I bet that heavy pellet going 740 is still going pretty fast even at 50 yards…..

see the video…theres a screw holding it in place

but it sure packs a punch….going on a hog hunt my self soon…thats what i have been building for…..

roundball does 1009 fps
230 grain dos 850’ish

but 740 is pretty flat shooting, when most hunting will be within 50y

Cool Valve!!
How does the plastic seat stay in place?

Mark

Nice work…..

… I dont wanna hear anything from you about how messy MY basement is 😛

Sheez Cyg,

I’m gonna put you on the Discovery Channel for an episode of “Build it Bigger”, or “Extreme Machines”.
Maybe you could just send it to me and I’ll see what it does to a pig. 🙂
