.458 HOMEBUILT GUN — NEW BULLET MOLD
THIS WINTER I BUILT A NEW GUN
.458 CAL. 44 INCH LONG BARREL.
I WAS PLAYING AROUND WITH A BULLET MOLD TODAY.
HAD AN OLD LEE MOLD FOR 30 CAL M1 CARBINE LAYING AROUND. SOLD THE GUN MANY YEARS AGO.
I MACHINED OUT THE MOLD FOR .458
PLUNGED DOWN WITH A .437 BALL ENDMILL, THEN CUT 2 DRIVING BANDS AT .460.
THE BULLET AND GUN COMBO MAKES 951 FPS, AND THE BULLET WEIGHS 380 GRAINS. THATS 763 FPE ON A 3100 PSI FILL.
THIS THING HAS HUGE RECOIL!!!
SEE THE RECOVERED BULLET, SOFT LEAD, SHOT INTO A CATALOG – IT DOESNT EVEN LOOK LIKE A BULLET ANYMORE!.
THATS A .22 KODIAK PELLET FOR SIZE COMPAIRSON.

The gun is unfinished.
It needs a handle, and anodizing.
Pictures show a 22 cubic inch tank (for testing only).

The gun weighs 9.5 pounds, with a 47 cubic inch, 3000 PSI, tank.
I have a 62 cubic inch aluminum tank ordered.
The bigger tank will give slightly more power.
Each shot uses 1000 PSI with the 47 cu inch tank.
The bigger tank will supply more pressure for longer, as the bullet goes down the barrel. The pressure drop should only be 700 PSI per shot.
The bullet mold is designed to reduce the bullet-to-barrel friction.
If I bump the pressure a little, I know this gun will do over 800 FPE.
The gun has two safeties, one is a “click on click off”, button, safety that blocks the sear.
The other is a gate on the breach that prevents the hammer force from hitting the valve (like the gate on your gearshift that keeps you from accidentaly hitting reverse from drive). If you leave the cocking knob up, the gun cant fire, even if the hammer drops. SEE THE PICTURE.
This gun has a very “sharp” recoil, for weighing 9.5 pounds!
The gun is gonna be a deer rifle for november.
