500 yard blasting
No, not with a bb gun. 😛
I know you guys have missed me, but I’ve been at my grandparent’s house for the last week or so. Went down to visit, then ended up staying for a while so I could go deer hunting. That didn’t work out well, I hate still hunting. In a stand, it’s early, cold, and I’m really really bored. 4 hours of that and not seeing a deer, loads of fun. I’d rather have brought my cz along and shot squirrels. There were plenty of them.
Anyway, on to the shooting. When I wasn’t having a blast in the deer stand, I went out to my “shooting range” which was really just a cow field that had a post in one side I used for targets. My normal spot is just short of the end of the field, and right about 515 yards (in one of the few spots without cow poop)
Since it was a last minute trip, I didn’t have any good ammo like I would have wanted to. So I went to the huntin’ store and grabbed a few boxes of winchester super-x ammo. Pretty crappy ammo, but whatever, it’ll do. So I set up a target, and shot at it.
Now, this is the same range I shot on when my rifle was .223. The effects at 500 yards were… not spectacular. Only hitting with about 500fpe, and pretty much no momentum with that little bullet. Not to mention if the wind was blowing it was hard to just hit the target. But now, the rifle is .300 win mag. Needless to say, there is more of a reaction when it hits. I think it is hitting with the same power at that range as the .223 at the muzzle. If i hit in line with the bullseye, I could see it through the scope because of the wood spraying out of the post.
But as shooting usually is, it was fun. I took a few pictures. Please pardon the poop, as I said, it’s a cow field. Fortunately it hadn’t rained in a while, so it was all pretty dry and not smelly. 😛
Took 9.5moa of elevation and just 1moa of windage. Pretty calm day.

The setup. I haven’t loved that mirage band as much as I did there.

Best 4 shot group I had.

And here is a video of me shooting some water jugs. When I did this with .223, it made the jugs wiggle a bit and leak water out. Now it was a big more exciting. If you listen close you will hear the initial thump when the bullet hits, then a split second later you can hear the much deeper boom of the rifle.
One day I’m going to talk my grandad into cutting down some of the big trees separating the fields so I can make it a 1000 yard range. But those trees are really really big, so it’ll take some convincing. 🙂 I also plan on buying a steel plate or two so I can shoot at that. I love hearing the ding at long range. 😀
Like I said. Fun stuff. 😀

The people back there just fend for themselves. It’s just a small subdivision, so not too many people.
😆
Just kidding. My backstop is the woods, and the ground in there. The woods are owned by my grandfather as well, and they go back for a mile or so. If the bullet doesn’t stop in a tree, it will hit the ground before coming out of the back. And of course we know if anyone is back there or not.
And if they aren’t supposed to be back there, then good luck to ’em. 😛
