7.5mm Swiss ammunition?
I have an old old custom built rifle on an old Mauser action with this written on it “261” “double m” and “crown, crow over n, 7,5m/m,m, 830, 497”. I know it is a 7.5mm Swiss but don’t know if it’s a 7.5×55 or 7.5×53.5. Can any one shed any light on this?

Zilog : you have a good one there? Easiest solution I can think of is take it to your local gunsmith and let him figure which it is?
The other way to do it is make a plaster cast of the chamber and use micrometer and calipers to see which bullet the casting Measurements matches. Be sure to use a release agent and also plug the bore?
Seems the only difference is 1.5mm in the length of the case neck. I guess the overall length of the chamber is the difference and would be almost impossible to measure, correctly.
Found this on a thread : This gun is chambered for 7.5X53.5, a direct predecessor of and VERY similar round to the 7.5X55. In fact, other than loading pressure, the only difference between the 2 is 1.5mm of neck length.
I would recommend making a chamber cast with cerrosafe or similar. If yours was cut a bit deep, you might be able to use 7.5X55 brass as is. Otherwise it’s easy enough, just trim 1.5mm off the existing 7.5 case.
If you load the long cartridge into the short chamber, the results could be fatal!?
