Hello Gents and Gals,

PURPOSE:
This page is a page that is dedicated to the .257 caliber Air Gun (s). Call it a Dedication Page, or call it a Reference Page or call it a Info Page, it’s all of the above. This page will stay updated with “CURRENT” info and will contain info on the guns that are available in 257. And that’s the point of the page, to share information regarding the 257 caliber Air gun and to become a quick reference page for anything that has anything to do with the .257″. This will be a page that can be found quickly and will contain all “CURRENT” info on the 257. That means MORE work for me and LESS work for you.

HISTORY:
The 257 caliber powder burner cartridge has been around since about the 1920’s. But in air guns, a 257 caliber powder burner barrel liner from TJ Enterprises has only been recently installed on a current air gun. As far as we know, Jack Haley and John Bowman are the 1st creators of such said air gun/caliber combos. And this gun is the Jack Haley .257 Scandalous which won L.A.S.S.O. in 2012 on its maiden voyage in the hands of John Bowman. L.A.S.S.O. is short for “Longrange Airgun Silhouette Shooters Organization” and it is simply and event for Air Guns only and steel targets are set up out to 300 yards. The 257 Scandalous quickly gained notoriety for what it was capable of. And that is……Long Range Accuracy and power. John Bowman would also often dispatch coyotes at well over 300 yards. John Bowman has shot 10’s of thousand’s of cast bullets in the 257 Air Gun and has openly shared all that he has learned. We owe much of what we know about the 257 today to Jack and John. The Haley Scandalous 257 is a very powerful, accurate and traditional Air Gun. Web links and pictures below.

CURRENT:
Doug Noble is an avid air gunner and an excellent machinist. Today, Doug is transforming the Airforce line of guns into 257 caliber beast. Doug has a history of machining since his early High School days and his current work on the Air Force line of guns is exceptional. His many post and pictures can be viewed right here on this very forum. Air force Air Guns have been around since 1994 and currently manufacture about 6 types of air guns. Air Force air guns are not very traditional looking and might remind you of an AR-15 type gun. No traditional wood and steel and bolt handle on these…lol! CALIBER:
The .257 by nature is a small game to medium game caliber. In powder burner format such as the 257 Roberts or Weatherby…etc…etc…etc, it can take Deer/Antelope sized game at some decent hunting distances depending on bullet construction/manufacturer. But in an air gun, we stick mostly to Coyote sized game at the biggest. Its one of the best small/medium game calibers IMHO. Bullets will range from about 60+ grs up to roughly 120 grs. Nominal O.D. of bullets will depend largely on groove diameter of ones barrel on his/her gun. But sizes will run between .257-.258″ as somewhat of a norm. But again, sizes can be up to about .260″+. The B.C. or Ballistic Coefficient of many available bullets will range from .129+- up to roughly over .300 BC. And in comparison to the typical .251 caliber Diablo Pellet such as JSB, Bejamin or Beeman (H&N), which has a BC of about .030+-, the lightest .257 bullet will have roughly 4x’s more BC. So as you can see, the 257 in an air gun pushing 900-1130 fps can do some amazing distance shooting and retain a lot of energy. I MEAN……..FOR AN AIRGUN AND ALL………………….LOL!

BULLET CASTING EQUIPMENT:
BCE can be bought from a multitude of websites and or stores. I refuse to list any in particular cause individual results might vary. But places like MIDWAY USA is a decent place to start if you want to get into casting. Bullet casting is NOT for everyone and its time consuming. At the same time, like reloading, it’s very rewarding. It also does not take a lot of equipment to get started. Here is a list of what’s needed to start casting for the 257 (or ANY caliber):
1. Safety Goggles or Glasses or even a Face Shield
2. Long sleeve Denim shirt
3. Brushed Leather Gloves
4. Long pants in either Denim or another NON FLAMMABLE material
5. 257 Bullet Mold
6. Plenty of lead
7. LYMAN, LEE or RCBS melting pot (20 lbs is a good). You can use a propane burner with some type of cast iron pot also. But that’s up to you. Do your homework.
8. Dipper/Ladle
9. Either a reloading press or a LEE hand press that will accept a standard 7/8×14 TPI sizer die
10. Bullet Lube and some studying/advise and some Common sense

Fire lapping a barrel.

I have fire lapped several rifles in my shooting career, most of them center fires that used jacketed bullets and I did it for improved accuracy, the 257 bore air guns I did for a different reason.

I fire lapped my two TJ Barrels for my Haley because I wanted them to be smoother inside to allow more shots between cleaning and for easier cleaning once fouled. Before fire lapping I was getting around 20 shots before I had considerable streaking and accuracy degradation, now it around 45 shots.

When I cleaned I used fine bronze wool on a 25 caliber brush and then followed it up with several doubled patches on a jag, then followed by #10 weight silicone oil to prep the barrel for the first shot lubed with #10 silicone oil. After fire lapping all but the most stubborn transfer deposits are removed with double patches.

The 1-14 barrel, I fire lapped with a Wheeler engineering kit from Midway, I had used their kits before and they had worked, so I was comfortable sending abrasive coated bullets down my bore, yes that does sound drastic, which is why I wanted to go with a proven, to me kit.

I prefer fire lapping to hand lapping due to the fact I ruined a Mini 14 barrel in my misspent youth and have never revisited hand lapping since.

The kit comes with three grits in little jars, 220. 320 and 600. Also included are two 1 inch by 2 inch steel plates and very clear instructions.

On my 1-14 barrel I followed the instructions on the kit, but used 15 shots per grit instead of the recommended 20 , 220. 320 and 600 and I cleaned thoroughly each 5 shots and thoroughly between grits. In the end I had a very smooth bore that resists fouling and cleans easier once it needs cleaning.

Then I fire lapped my 1-10 twist barrel and things were different.

First of all I did not use the 220 grit and I checked between shots because I was not using lube on the bullets as before so I was interested to see if they were fouling without lube because I had not checked that before on the 1-14.

And indeed they were, if I fired one shot, I could not notice fouling, on the 2nd shot I did notice fouling and on the 3rd shot I had major streaks. As a result I fired 20 shots of 320, cleaning thoroughly between shots, which is one hell of a lot of work, and then after those 20 shots I switched to 600 grit and I fired 25 shots, cleaning each time between shots.

To me the cleaning between shots was a no brainer. If I have streaking, I am polishing the lead deposited in the bore, not the bore.

When I shot the rifle after cleaning I also noticed again something different, the accuracy with100 grain NOE bullets had noticeably improved, and of course the shot count between cleaning had also.

I had miked my groove diameter prior to fire lapping and could not notice a difference in pre and prior lapping, but I was also using my “Harbor Freight caliper for the blind” so it was hard to tell if anything had changed in dimensions. Doug slugged the barrel when I had it set back for recutting the lead, it slugged out within the norms of other TJ barrels, just one heck of a lot smoother.

I did this on the 1-10 after I had cut the lead for 100 grain NOE bullets, I did not notice a increase in the lead dimensions or that they chamber any easier, they are still in that “putting a cork in a wine bottle category”.

I fully recommend the Wheeler engineering fire lap kit, but I would recommend cleaning every shot and not using the 220 grit.

101 “QUICK TIPS/FACTS” about the 257

1. Best bang for your buck barrel in .257 is the TJ Enterprises barrel liner (Google this company name for pricing and phone number. No internet sales)
2. Common bore and groove dimensions are .250 BORE/.257 GROOVE
3. Common O.D. dimensions of TJ barrels tend to be roughly 9/16″ (.562″+-)
4. Pure Lead or 20-1 Lead seems to be the best to date
5. Hard Cast bullets don’t appear to be as accurate as Pure Lead in TJ’s barrel liners. But don’t discount harder cast bullets. These are firearm barrels.
6. Fire Lapping or Hand Lapping both work wonders in these barrels and are pretty much necessary to keep leading down and accuracy up
7. The more these barrels are shot, the more accurate they get
8. So far, accuracy is superb at velocities from 900 to about 1130 fps. More data to come. Please test velocity for your particular guns best accuracy
9. Various Air Guns and Barrel Manufacturers could be used for this project. The list is still growing.
10. To date, both the Condor and the Haley 257’s have hit Soda cans at 446, 502 and 552 yards!

I also have the DYOTAT hammer valve and spring on my AirForce Condor, a 32′ TJ barrel which was threaded for a Hatsan Air Stripper at the Muzzle. It has a Limbsaver in between the Air Stripper and a carbon fiber shroud I bedded using Brownell’s Acraglass. I put a Chinese made carbon fiber bottle on the gun which is rated up to 4350 PSI and run tethered through a Ninja Paintball regulated valvee to a 4500 PSI Great White tank from Joe Brancato. FX no limits scope rings as set up on my gun give me 138 MOA, I have a 4 x 16 50 Vortex Viper scope. I was able to hit a target at 547 yards this week using 90 grain Long Flat Nose rounds from Lead Bullets Technology. If you order a mold from LBT, specify that you are shooting air gun. Veral Smith made an experimental mold after talking with me about subsonic shooting. There is only a .1 rise from the body of the bullet to the bearing band, so there is almost no drag as the rounds fly.

It is raining here in Boulder City NV, so the dirt may not fly so well the next time I go shooting, but if it does I want to see if I can put rounds on a target at 800 meters.

I cant help but wonder if the manufacturer’s are noticing a significant rise in the sales and rise in popularity of this round due to air rifle enthusiasts. Surely this caliber and especially this particular cast bullet must be much more popular amoungst air riflemen compared to most firearm marksmen and general powder burning shooting crowd????? I dont hear much of the handloading guys making up many .257 wildcats… Maybe a few will load for the expensive 257 Weatherby round. I seem to recall a 257 Peters, and of course the 257 Ackley being probably the most popular wildcat … My guess is that most guys loading these cartridges likely arent casting lead bullets and more likely are using jacketed tailor made bullets from one of the regular reloading suppliers. Speer, Hornady, RCBS, ect… So who buys casting moulds for .257 and especially that oldskool classic 257420 by Ideal/Lyman? :2cents: :2cents:

I have a hot rodded .257 AirForce Condor. I have a Lyman 257420 mold. Everyone who shoots .257 likes that round, but they don’t like the fact that the Lyman mold only comes in a 2 cavity configuration. Arsenal Molds is now making a four cavity 257420. In addition to faster casting, he rounds from the Arsenal mold make tighter groups than the ones I get from the Lyman mold. It is available in either aluminum or brass. My guess is that a barrelsleeve would be a big improvement for you.
A 30” inch TJ’s liner will have quite some flex in it because the diameter is quite small, i think your silencer must have some influence on the flex of the barrel as well.

I have published some pictures here somewhere around here in the past on the TAG. Nothing too current or special. Most of my images are old and are at the beginning getting started.
First version of .257 was the Dyotat valve inside of the newer generation Airforce Condor frame with the revised 2013 safety trigger group.
This was the first one to convert over to 257 and Doug was unfamiliar with it. It had problems with the hammer binding in the frame, So I got a new frame with the older styled trigger group and installed all of Doug’s goodies and it was working but still had inconsistencies. I was going to leave it as it was but Doug Noble (DYOTAT) insisted that I bring it to him and let him tinker with it and see where we could get it dialed in and tuned better. He is about a good 200km drive from my residence. SO I spent a whole day puttzing around in his shop, trying to stay outta trouble with my BB-gun that I also brought (a whole other story). Looking at bullets that were slugged through my barrel it was determined to have a defect. Doug had another longer 30″ barrel he swapped out. I ended up leaving the gun with him for a couple of weeks and when I returned to pick it up he had completed much of the stuff we had already started on my previous visit, which I am unsure if I have any of the newer changes that progressed. Essentially he tuned and revised the hammer and breech. Threaded my new barrel, installed a WOK Guard and AR15 pistol grip and did a very nice job of setting me up with the Super Sear trigger job. (that is absolutely a must have aftermarket part for the older generation trigger group!) I since then also replaced the one inch tubed BSA 4-16×50 crosshair recticle scope, to an NC Star VISM EVO 6-24×50 etched mildot sidefocus scope. I also added a very effective LDC. With the 30″ barrel and LDC the gun is quite long but I strictly am shooting paper or plinking off a bench using the bipod and usually tethered to a external bottle. I am getting 30 or 40 shot groups at less than an inch at a hundred yards . If I tried, I am sure that I could get less than a 1/4″ at a hundred with a 3 or 4 shot group pretty easily. The gun shoots very well but it still isnt totally intuitive or really comfortable to shoot. The ergonomics of the bottle used as a stock and scope height is not so conducive to a natural shooting position and takes getting used to…. There are numerous ways to correct this such as angled bottle adapter and also aftemarket add on stocks such as the MadDog or even the Talon Tunes slide on sleeve with cheekpiece (which still requires higher rings and angled adapter) So far I just rough it out…. The other thing to remeber is that this gun has a heavy hammer and spring. Mine is probably a bit lighter than most but it does have a certain amount of lockup time and momentum to it traveling down the barrel before striking the breech and the breech bumping open the valve. All this going on , it has a charcteristic that resembles shooting a springer type of airgun and it helps to use the similiar type of technique. Regardless, its not as bad as it sounds and I am getting damn better groups than many of the PB ‘r guys that shoot High Power Firearms at my range!
I mainly shoot three types of bullets. My main is a special 88gr Spitzer that I get from RJ Porter and his High Powered Preciscion Custom Airgun Target Ammo Service. It is supposedly an odd rare Ideal moulde that he casts it with,,, The other Bullet I like is the faithful 257420 Lyman and the third is the same 257420 but with custom hollowpointed moulde.
I am getting an average of 1040 fps with the 88gr bullet and am shooting tethered to a scuba tank filled to 3450 psi and usually dont shoot much further down than 2900 psi. Two 80cuft tanks will give me a good day of target shooting plus I have portable gasoline powered air compressor too.

I think a carbon sleeve will do the trick just as well, while adding less weight.
Did you post some pictures of your rig on tag? Quite curious.

Since firearms shooters are restricted to shooting indoor (some exceptions) most shootingranges are indoor in the Netherlands.

Mostly 10, 25, 50 and or 100 meters, the longest gunrange open to the public is 300 meters (outdoor).
Some like the one in Katwijk have an electronic ‘optical measuring system’, which automaticly registers shot placement and shows it on a monitor next to your stand.

Good to see your posting! Thanks for the update, glad to see youre making progress and thins workung out for you.
I want to also epoxy a sleeve to stiffen my 30″.TJ barrel. I have reviewed several sources for Carbon Fiber tubing. It is just a matter of commiting to buying the materials.
I am still outstounded by such a wonderful club and facility that you are able to participate with…. 100meteres indoors is quite a venue!!!

After a long period of silence, finally a small update from across the pond.

We did some chrono testing as well, the gun was giving 200 joule at around 190 bar, 300 m/s with 72,5 grain.
Hammerspringload was still at a zero so it was not yet max power.

We weren’t totally happy with the accuracy of the gun, so it underwent some major changes last week.

Following an old German hunters saying: ‘Der Lauf schießt, der Schaft trifft’ (i.e. The barrel shoots, but the stock hits) we decided to make some changes.

To reduce the flex and resonation of the barrel it was epoxied into a piece of hydraulic tubing. Its outer diameter is now 0.71 inch.

To improve the handling of the gun and trying to eliminate some of the hold sensitiveness the stock was remodeled.
The grip, cheek piece and front end were completely redone.
Giving the following result.

First time i got to try the gun after undergoing the changes was at the 100 meters match in Katwijk last weekend.
Resulting in the score of 283 points (330 is max).
A major improvement, the two matches before the changes were made i scored 196 and 226 points.

Last tuesday i was able to take the improved gun to the shooting range for the first test without match-stress.

At 100 meters the following groups were shot with 87 grains RCBS sized to .257:

Sub 1 inch groups at 110 yards at its first range outing, it seems the changes have been spot on.

Lambertus, welcome back from vacation. Thanks for the update! Sounds like your contests really are fun events. I used to compete in High Power Service Class matches and intially had alot of fun but as I refined my skills and got more competitive the fun diminished as the contests became more and more serious. Not that the competitiveness was a bad thing. I respect the discipline and skill required to compete at such level. It’s just that the level of competition is just taken way too seriously for my entertainment and pleasure. Your competitions seem like they would have much greater appeal to my casual and lighthearted personality!
Sorry to hear about the disapointment experienced with your rig. Well, one thing to be said about competition is that it does alot for the research, advancement, and testing the performance of gear. Certainly real world experiences. Your failures exposed the weakness of your gear and allows you the opprotunity to only improve and better your platform. Congratulations on the improvement and getting it managed!
Boy that sure is some pretty countryside you have out there shooting in those fields. Love the windmills too!

Glad to hear that you got an assortment of sizers. I am confident in my prediction that once you start sizing your ammo to the correct dimensions of your bore, you should realize a much greater gain in your rifles performance!

Sorry for the long wait, was out of the country for vacation.

About the 100m matches here.
There are 8 matches in 8 different places during the year.
Every shooter pays an entryfee of 15 euro’s, which is used to rent the accomodation for a day and to pay for the all the costs of organising these events.
For most of the shooters (even the serious competitors) its more about having a fun day with likeminded people than winning. So always a great atmosphere.

A couple of weeks ago i took my .257 to her first 100m match, which was a failure…
The BAM trigger was getting heavier with each shot i took, the brass just wasn’t up to the job (extreme wear).
Than there were these unexplainable flyers that went way off. (Turned out to be the barrelband.)
After some brainstorming on the way back, the Guppy was returned to her maker for some changes.

Last week i picked her up, trigger has been redone as well as the barrelband.
The supertight fit barrelband was swapped out for a much looser one.
Since the local shooting range is closed for a month i had to give it a try at a more windy place.


As long as i read the wind right, it was giving ragged hole groups at 100 meters.

Last week i also received my sizers (.254/.255/.256/.257/.258) so i can start to experiment a bit with that as well.

I am very curious about this as well, honestly i don’t think velocity is the biggest factor in getting good accuracy.
Maybe at larger distances than 100m it will become a more important factor, for now the relatively low fps doesnt seem to effect groupsize.
Next time i get the chance to shoot at the above location i will try larger distance (maybe 300 meter?) and see how she does.
