Q:

A Hummingbird tuning ?

With regard to the Hammer spring working with the regulator, in theory (at least) is it possible to both reduce power and per-shot air usage so as to make less power and extend the shot count? Also how does one remove the hammer spring (to clip a coil)? Is it an outright simple thing to do?
thanks
Darryl

I only ever did that to PCP’s that had no regulator, and a ski-slope shot strings. Cured what ailed them.

Sure you can but with Mr. Rowe’s method there is noting permanent.

I can just quickly make a day light savings adjustment back an hour to noon again.

My experience with cutting hammer springs was always pretty good: flatter shot string and lower Es; lower air consumption. :winkn:

if you want to keep the reg and hst in sink, just rotate the barrel to reduce the transfer port hole to the speed you want, it will have a consistent ES then lowering the reg pressure and tuning the HST. that’s what I done to mine down to 10fpe and vary accurate with JSB 13.4g. vary quiet for back yard plinking and pest control.

Gee, on a new bird I wouldn’t cut anything just yet.

Did you try to adjust the reg and hammer spring to lower your speed ?
To increases efficiency I would think it’s the valve spring that’s needs tuning to achieve an increase shot count ?

All in all a balance with all three springs.

Just my two pennies.

p.s. maybe in the need of an “Ernest tune”. :8:

That is way SMART Ernest !

I have a Compact .177 cal that came sending JSB 10.3 gr @ 920ish.
HST at all the way out ccw now it’s @ 890ish, I’m thinking of doing your above method to it to dial it down a bit.
Making the HST at about half way in so I will have some play in both direction.

Rotate the barrel? Very interesting idea. Have to remember to try that. Once I get a couple of issues resolved I’ll see what this Bird can be trained to do. 😉 Thanks Ernest. How did the low FPS effect your shot count?

And, someone has to be the second one ?

Well I don’t mind being the second one. Just figured there were some closet tuners out there at least. Guess that door is still shut?

I forgot to answer your question about cleaning the barrel. I ran a couple of patches through (awkward) and they came out clean enough. I did switch pellets, but other than that…??? More testing to come. I looking at maybe setting up the 16 grain Jumbo Pellet for about 26~28 fpe. Maybe a bit lower. Not looking to take any beasts Just target shoot out to 50-60 yards.

I just got around to adjusting the regualtor, and the hammer spring tension. NO chance yet to shoot for results. Busy day. I’ll need to refill my little (44c/ft) air tank tomorrow before going at it anyway.
Surely someone else besides Ernest has started tweaking their Bird? :11:

Darryl,

I read in the tread below, your experiencing accuracy issues with your new bird ?

Did you clean it’s barrel lately, new barrels often need cleaning about every 150 shot or so. About a mag to lead in and stay with that same tin of pellets, don’t switch from one to another without cleaning again.
Don’t run any metal rods down it, just pull-throughs.

Since the bird landed on our shores, I don’t think so.

Just kidding that’s not funny at all !

I wonder if Ole Ernest ever gets a chance to sleep??
