Q:

A slight bit of overkill?

A week or so ago I went out looking for a scope, having failed to find the discontinued Falcon Merlin (x56 IR). I ended up buying the Nikko Stirling 6-24x56AGir (‘Nighteater’) for £185. It certainly has presence, and works well enough, but I can’t help thinking I’d get the job done just as well with something that was half the price. I can see right into peoples’ bedrooms with it though (while testing it). The parallex-wheel is a treat, I’ve never had a scope with one of those before. I’ve yet to test it in low-light conditions, but in daylight it’s as clear as…um…daylight. The turrets are all nice and clicky. The glass is a nice deep shade of green. And the IR is a fun little gizmo.

Today I was mostly getting groups of around an inch at 40 yds with approx 650fps. I got my first rabbit the other week, but that was with the old scope. In one side of it’s chest and out the other, at approx 25 yds. My cat ate the lot, bar the head. That got chucked around the kitchen for about half an hour before he decided he’d prefer chicken.

Packed my silencer with foam, which made quite a difference. That’s about it really. Next on my list is a pellet-holder. 😀

That’s worth the price of admission right there! 😆

Ya got that right! 80 Grit!

Over Kill? What’s Over Kill?

Make mine Zeiss please! 😀

Don’t fret mate, soon enough we will be there as well. It would seem that these fascist, Capitalist, Banker demigod pigs are finally making their rounds intent on giving all us honest working men a nice swift kick in our yarbles!

I think $150 buys more scope in the US than the scopes you can get for 75 quid in the UK, hence people being quite satisfied with $150 here. Taxes and a bit of gouging going on in the UK IMHO.

Yes, you’re absolutely right. For $150 in the States you’re probably getting something that would cost us around £150 here. 👿

Rip-Off UK, otherwise known to foreign companies as ‘Treasure Island’ and ‘The Gold Coast’.

Yeah, that does seem to be the case. My brother has just bought two £70 scopes (the second [RIFLESCOPE] replaced the first [RICHTER] ) and both have required maximum reticule adjustment to get a zero. We figure it must be the scopes rather than the rifle grooves or the mounts, because the even cheaper scope (BSA) that came with the rifle is spot-on with minimal adjustment.

But then a lot of you guys swear by $150 scopes, so I’m not sure what’s going on. Maybe he’s just been unlucky with two friday-afternoon jobbies.

I’ve been waiting for some weeks now on a back ordered scope, and am getting tired of the wait. If it takes much longer, I may just get the Nighteater myself, maybe the 8-32X60 IR. I researched them some time ago and liked what I saw.

By most accounts you made a good choice, don’t think it’s over kill at all, and with scopes, it’s usually better to spend the extra buck than to roll the dice with cheaper ones.

I don’t think that it’s overkill. I have one on my Airwolf and it is nice and bright as you say, and is just a generally good, solid and well-built scope. Sure, there are cheaper options, but mine does everything that I need and want it to do, so I couldn’t be happier with the choice.
