A thought about Predators and making a better Hollow Point

Everyone generally praises the Predator poly-mag for its accuracy and stopping power. I agree with that.

But I’m just looking closely at one now, and basically, what I see is a hollow point pellet that has the “hollow” filled in with the polymer tip. Not sure how much that tip aids in penetrating the target, but it’s pretty clear that the tip creates a more aerodynamic profile than a HP’s wind-scooping profile, making it more accurate over greater distances.

Which then led me to think about and wonder if filling a hollow point’s tip with something frangible (i.e. candle wax) would eliminate the wind-scoop… providing the accuracy gain, then basically break away at impact to provide the expansion (stopping power) of the HP. No “point” necessary, just enough wax to fill the concave and improve aerodynamics.

Am I right, or am I wrong? Or am I thinking too much? 😉

No, I’m not going to start eyedropping meltied wax into the noses of all my HPs, 😆 but wondering if pellet manufacturers have considered this for their HP offerings.

Remember that post I did with the 7 ring slugs drilled out to HPs? I had no accuracy issues with those. We’d offer them except for the ridiculous price we’d have to charge since it’s all hand labor here in the sweatshop…

I wonder how those slugs would do if filled with that stuff that blows up on a hard contact? Would it blow in the barrel or maybe not until the slug hit a rock or bone?

agree with WOK. Been there done that. Pellets are like shuttle cocks…heavy up front. When you add MORE weight to the front, you upset what has already been engineered to work.

I for 1 have been filling .25 cal Crow mags and .22’s also with bb’s. With no improvement in accuracy but when they do hit….man do they overpenetrate. Of course BB’s are heavier than a little bit of wax but, it does the same thing, it upsets the balance of the projectile. Also, when you put something up front on a pellet it has to be perfectly concentric to the projectile cause if it is not centered, it will upset the rotation of the projectile therefore making it Inaccurate. Kinda like a car tire that has not been balanced properly.

Predator Polymags are perfect the way they are, and so are the Crow mags. I definitely would not be caught shooting crow mags in high winds. If its windy outside, hell, i don’t even take out my airguns.

The filling of hollow points have been discussed and done before. The reason you do not hear much of it is the accuracy kinda sucked. Guys have filled them with wax, super glue, bb’s etc.

The results were always lacking. The predators have been the only super accurate attempt that is worth while.

No prob with the pointed end of the Pred, I’m taking it one step further for all pellet manufacturers across the board. I think it’d be a major improvement for HPs in general.

Everyone knows that HPs make bigger holes, but they like to go where the breeze takes them. So why not temporarily “fill” the hollow to make them aerodynamically efficient and accurate until they impact the target?

Think about Crow Magnums, for example. People have a major love-hate relationship with them. I know I do… I can’t count on them for accuracy, but when they manage to hit what I’m aiming at, hoooo – boy… it’s a mess.

So based on my concept, fill the nose cavity of the CrowMag with some sort of hard but brittle substance that allows for better aerodynamic, and upon impact, the substance disintegrates… allowing the HP to expand and do its job like it’s supposed to.

See what I’m saying?

in general I just suppose that wax would be cheaper than polymer points. Althought manufacturers would just paint the wax red or black and call it super awesome ballistic wonderstuff and you still end up paying for it so I do not think it makes much difference unless you want to go the eyedropper route (I might have to try just to see what happens)
