Q:

AA410 carbine side lever vs. bolt

I am watching for a used AA410 carbine. I passed on one yesterday on the Yellow classified because it was a bolt action. Now I am wondering what the real difference is. Is the side lever a lot better than the bolt? Any body have experience with both? What are the advantages/disadvantages of each? My only PCP is my Talon and I have been thinking about a repeater lately. Thanks for your input.

I cant find the pictures anywhere, but somebody put a T-handle on the end of their bolt. Basically replaced the bolt handle with a custom peice.

This made it impossible to pull back incorrectly.

I’ve shot both and I marginally prefer the side lever and do own one, so it might just be a case of “what you know”… but I know I wouldn’t pass on a good deal on a bolt action version.

The entire issue with people finding the bolt action stiff is they were trying to cycle it like a firearm – it needs to be pulled straight back by holding it close to the centerline of the rifle, it can be troublesome when you try and pull it from the end of the bolt because your torquing it and it causes it to bind up.

If you are crisp and clean with your movements, the bolt action is not bad at all. I’ve never shot a side lever, but I do know that people have trouble the first two or three times with my bolt action, until they figure out how to do it.
You have to grip it right. Thumb on left side of bolt head, and finger hooked over the bolt handle is best.
You have to pull it all the way back. It will click and then it is easy to slide forward and lock again. If you don’t pull it all the way back, the magazine may not index.
I use some really nice teflon grease on mine. That makes a big difference in how well the bolt handle cycles. They said it needed to break in. BS. It needs lubed. Moments after the teflon it was sliding very nicely.

Again, I’ve never shot a side lever, but I wouldn’t pass up an old bolt action either. They are fine rifles and super accurate.

Good Luck, and I hope you get one or the other, and soon. You will wish you had one several years ago.
