Q:

about the mystery barrels on the Mutant Short (sorry)

OK so here we are in hot and steamy August. I haven’t been to a range so far this year. But I do have 25 yards in my back yard. So, with my Mutant Short and it’s mystery barrel I can confidently claim that once any small bird or small furry mammal is in my sights, it’s as good as gone. To those of you living without a CZub or Listone barrel, but maybe with a barrel from the Czech Republic, can you weigh in on your life with the mystery barrel? Sorry if I’ve brought up any painful memories.
BTW I mean Sparrows and Starlings and Squirrels. The neighbors want the Squirrels eliminated from robbing their gardens. Robins, Yellow Finches, Cardinals, Blue Jays, and the like have safe haven.

Hi Bud,
That’s great news about your barrel. So Petr swapped or sold you an official CZub barrel? If so, the performance is not really surprising. My barrel is devoid of any markings, and of course Petr never did identify it for me. Given the hit-or-miss performance of those “Made in Germany” barrels, I can’t rule out that I have a good one. I’d rather think I have a barrel from a Czech barrel maker which uses the same button-manufacturing method as Lothar Walther barrels are made with. Just for my sanity and piece of mind. Maybe I can quantify the 50 yard accuracy one day? Meanwhile, it’s a neat little gun, and it serves me well in the shooting distance I have to work with. Shudda moved to the country while there was still some left around here. :sadn:

Hey Daryl,

I got Peter’s CZub on mine. Endo, helped me identify it. But, it’s half a inch longer than a regular barrel. It’s dead on out to 50 yards. Haven’t taken farther, but I’m very happy with it. I’d like to try another barrel like Listone to see how it shoots. Right now, it’s perfect with Donnie’s LDC and my Athlon 6-24×50.

Bud

Foxback, I’d like to spend some time with it where I can assess it out past 40, or 50 yards so I can see if there’s a need for a replacement. I just haven’t been able to get to that. I was supposed to receive a genuine CZ barrel from Petr, but he went belly-up; he’d agreed to the exchange too, actually a sale. He did install a different barrel from the one that came with the gun (the first one had drill marks on it; the replacement does not). The barrel in the gun now performs well at 25~30 yards. That’s all I have to shoot within until I can get to a proper range. Luckily I became aware of a public range only 30 or so miles up the road. I intend to check it out. That’s city life for ya.
anyway I was just asking because I wanted to get a sense of what others with the Short and the non-CZ-or-Listone barrel were experiencing. Here’s an odd observation: in my chronograph tests the 18.13 grain JSB Jumbo Heavy shows lower Es and Sd numbers than the Air Arms 18 grain pellet, but the AA pellet is more accurate at 25~30 yards. Go figure.

PS I’ve had the demented thought which sees the Short as superfluous for the short range I shoot in my yard, given that I have a sub-FAC Parker-Hale Phoenix underlever in .22 that’s actually cooking along at near 14 fpe; more than enough to take small birds and squirrels, and nearly as accurate as the Short. Then, I’ve been accused of being crazy.

Darryl……

Why r u still using the (mystery barrel)

Did u not trade it in 4 the cz barrel???
When the offer was made, or better yet get a Listone barrel from Jaime.
The Listone barrel is not as pellet fussy.

Mine will stack cheep crosman pellets from Wally world.
And stacks Jsb’s all day long too. :suprisedn:
