Q:

Accuracy defined

Hey guys, when people talk about the Edgun or Crickets they always describe them as “incredibly, amazingly, I am blown away” accuracy. You guys been shooting many different types of guns that I’ve seen videos of and I think they are very accurate as well. For example last night I saw AOA’s review of FX Gladiator MKII. That gun was shooting in the same hole for 5 shots. So could you fill me in as to what you mean by amazingly accurate? Is it more accurate then lets say the FX Gladiator?

Just a newbie searching for answers 🙂

“It’s not your daddy’s Red Ryder Jack” Lol nice shooting RC, that’s crazy how far you can shoot that 101 grain bullet. You picked a perfect spot for shooting. Lots of space and an endless supply of apples in back of you.

Donny,

I will use my Haley 257 Scandalous with 36 inch TJ barrel, I have two utube video’s posted that show hits at 502 yards and 552 yards using 101 grain NOe bullets, shooting tethered at 3600 PSI from a Caldwell StableTable and Caldwell Range bag. I use a Leupold VX111 4.5×14 Long Range 30 MM SF with Hollands reticle.

I use Burris insert rings because they allow me to shim my scope without marring the tube. Right now I have the rifle sighted in for 280 yards and still have 95 MOA of adjustment in elevation and once maxed out, at around 780 yards, I still have the 24 MOA reticle which gives me an additional 192 inches at 800 yards.

The cans are on the mine tailing that is the oblong white spot at ten oclock off the muzzle

502 yard video

This utube is the 552 yard shot but it is almost 10 minutes into the video and can put you to sleep, but even as boring as the first attempt at making utube video’s, I have had a combination of 1000 views on them.

I did break a can at 602 yards, but it was with shrapnel and I did not count it as a hit.

I am taking notes Zoco! lol funny you talked about 150/250 yds. I was watching this video today with the Air Arms pro sport (Springer) shooting 218 yds. The shooter has to aim high in the trees to hit his target that is placed near the ground.

Kindly note that ED is working extremely hard to optimize his guns for accuracy in the range of 150/250 yds……… 😉

The 100 yds plus game is totally different from 50 yds, and requires a different barrel/pellet/speed combination all together……..

And yes I agree with RC, – any PCP should group “hole in one” at 20/30 yds, – regardless of powerlevel. At those distances even wind does not matter much unless gale like conditions. 100 yds plus is a totally different story………

I fully agree with Zoco on this, at 150 yards I/you can hit Pepsi cans all day long with a good rifle stretch that to 195 and you start missing them most of the time, i have not seen any of my rifles shoot them 8-10/10 at that range & i will take Eds word & tune the Edgun and see how it perform at that range, when time permits. I will admit i am not the b est shooter and i usually don’t calculate for the wind but my Range has a wall from one side all the way to the end & i usually shoot in very calm conditions at that range.

What rifle will you be using?

Here in America, those of us who shoot long range air guns with cast bullets, judge accuracy by the distance that we can hit a 12 oz soda can on video.

450 yards is do able with the best of the rifles, 550 yards and beyond with the very best rifles and bullet combinations.

The first of next month I am going to try and extend that to 600-750 yards.

But again, wind is the spoiler of best laid plans.

RC

Here is a group of 5 shots with four top rifles i have, the distance is actually 55 yards not 50 as written on them, since i didn’t have a range finder & just used the marking on the side to guesstimate & later found it was 54-55 with a range finder.

A couple of things to also note. As mentioned by Helder after we cleaned the Edgun barrel we were actually getting better grouping not by much but better never the less.

The wolverine can defiantly do much better but its not regulated and the E.S for these 5 shots was around 100FPS difference, the other thing is i was using the JSB 44grain pellets & the Wolverine was made to shoot better with the heavier 50 Grains JSB that Daystate sells under their brand name.

Going back to the other topic about quality of rifles, this was a leaking wolverine that i fixed by machining the valve stem to seal better & tested out.

Here in the UK we usually judge accuracy on a grouping size of less than a 5 pence coin (smallest UK coin) at any given distance

If a rifle can group within a 5p at 40 yards its accuracy is better than one that can only group at 30 yards ..

the distances are a lot closer as the power levels for the UK are so low (max 16.25 Joules without a licence)

Anything less than 30 yards is not a true account of a rifles accuracy as even at our low power levels all the pellets will go through one hole with any decent rifle

I would second the 50 yard range.

I shoot long distance almost exclusively. The problem with testing for accuracy at 100 yards and beyond is simply the wind.

What the wind dictates is how good a shot the shooter is, not so much how accurate the rifle is.

Granted it takes a good accurate rifle to shoot 100 yard groups, but in the wind that accurate rifle is dependent on the shooters skill at shooting in the wind.

Now if you have access to the Leupold underground 100 yard range where there is no wind it is a different story. At one time I thought of building my own 100 yard underground range, but it costs more money than I was willing to spend.

So yes I would say 50 yards, but never anything under 50 yards.

When I see these guys post their 20 yard groups and exclaim their rifle is a tack driver, I have to laugh.

Roachcreek

Thanks for the clarification! Now I know what people mean when they are referring something as an accurate gun. Learn something new everyday. Thanks again guys..

An accurate high end rifle should be able to shoot tight groups at further distances. Testing a $2000 rifle at 20 yards is a waste of time. Any high end rifle should be putting them all in the same ragged hole at 20. However, for a $200 gun, half inch group at 20 yards is pretty awesome.
An Edgun, or a Daystate for example, that is shooting anything much bigger than a half inch group at 50 yards could probably use a barrel cleaning (or a different shooter).A half inch group is EXPECTED of them at 50 yards. now if it can shoot a .25 inch group at 50, them is a real accurate specimen of that model.

so: A cheap gun that can shot small groups at 20 yards up is accurate (for the money), but a high end rifle can only be called accurate if it can do the same at 50 yards at least.

Thanks Naser, So basically accuracy is describing shooting long distances (100 yds+). Maybe I am just being too analytical of what people say. Another example “shoots like lasers”. Does that mean theses guns are so powerful that they are shooting straighter than other guns. Less of a loop in projectile path?

I would say more like 50 yards in general, with groups of about 12mm (1/2 inch) is considered very accurate. Personally I shoot at 100 yards and most of the time 195 yards at Pepsi cans.
