Adding an 18 inch barrel…
Just out of curiosity, how much would velocity improve on a Talon SS if I add an 18 inch barrel? I am currently shooting a 12 inch in .22, and I may in the not so distant future swap it out for an 18. Just curious on what I would gain with a 16 grain pellet?

Thanks for the replies Sharp and Lang. I couldn’t agree more about the fact that accuracy is more important than velocity, ESPECIALLY with an airgun. I have humanely killed both crows and starlings with a 450 fps Crosman, with well placed head and neck shots. At this time, I am happy with how well my SS shoots, but in the foreseeable future, I can see that I may need more velocity for the shooting that could occur at my place. I live on the edge of a greenbelt, and in this greenbelt is a group of raccoons that is becoming more and more bold as it gets colder and colder. We have seen them on the deck more than once, and they show very little fear of our cat, and are showing less and less fear of our dogs all the time. I am cool with a “live and let live” policy with the raccoons, so long as they leave the pets alone. However, the first time they tangle with one of them, they instantly go on my hitlist, and I want to make sure the weapon I am using has adequate power to dispense of them, even if they are 40+ yards away. That is why I was asking about velocity, as it is directly related to a flatter trajectory at long distances, as well as power needed to humanely kill something that size. Perhaps the 12 inch barrel is all I need to do this – I don’t know.

I’m not sure about that. At 700fps most rabbits go “Ouch!” when the round clobbers them. At 800fps they go “Ooh, what was that…?” as the round wazzes cleanly through them. At 900fps they notice nothing. Until they return to their warren and die of blood-loss. 😉 😆
Velocity is not everything. If the gun is performing up to YOUR standards AT THE TARGET, the lower fill pressure is BETTER and the little loss of velocity doesn’t mean a damn thing. Your lower fill pressure just means you get quite a few more fills than the guy shooting from 27-2800 psi (or more) before needing to carry the scuba in for topoff.
Let target performance and type of shooting determine if you NEED that extra 100fps. Then there’s always the longer barrels to boost velocity without having to use as much air. Lots of good advise here and some really HOT shootin guns but what matters is if you are happy with the performance of Yours, at the target. No tree rat will ever know the difference between 725 and 825fps if your shot is well placed.

I have fiddled with the tophat some, but not with a full 3000 psi fill. Should I get my scuba topped off, then try? Could it just be that my fill is starting too low, so I am getting lower numbers?

That is a little low, but I bet you get more shots than I did.

Have you fine tuned your top hat? Also my numbers are at 3k fill.
Seems like my numbers for a 12 incher is low! I am getting about 790 with .22 CPs, and 707 with Kodiaks. This is off a 2600 psi fill, so my numbers shouldn’t be that low, should they?

For me 12″ Kodiaks were 755 with 16″ 855
12″ CP’s 855 12″ 955
You would see around 930 fps with a 16 gr. pellet.

While I’ll agree with the majority of the responses here already I’d say your last post hits the sharpest point. Accuracy.
I am able to drop squirrels 45 yards out with a single round from my SS firing a 15.8 gr JSB Exact at approx. 790-800 fps. As long as your gun is accurate at the required range you should be fine for kill power with what you have. (referring to your setup here)
In truth, I have stuck rabbits at 70 yards and taken 1 squirrel at 73 yards with my SS however the squirrel did require a follow up shot for the finish. The first one was in the top of his head and immobilized him.
While racoon’s are tougher and thicker it still comes down to shot placement. If you are capable of eye or fusebox shots your Talon will do the job. (In my opinion.)
