Adjusting the tophat of the CO2 adaptor?
How do I go about adjusting the tophat of the CO2 adpator
for increased umph (power)?
I set the power level to the max on the rifle but still get barely
a puff out of the barrel after I fire a pellet.
I know the Co2 adaptor is full of CO2 gas (after I attach it to the 12oz. CO2 tank) because I can’t detach the two unless I
put them in the freeze for 1/2 hour. *And there is a release
of CO2 gas after I finally detach them.
** 12 oz. CO2 tank was filled a day earlier.

Oooh, 1/4″ gap scared me at first (and I’m fearless). I checked my CO2 Tank/Adapter and it has about 1/8″ gap. Funny, I didn’t notice the gap before. Thanks for the heads up 😯
I received a brand new adaptor within a week. WOW, what a
service ! I can’t say enough about the folks at AF airguns. Professional, polite and understanding.
There is a day and night difference between my old adaptor and the new one. The new one punches very hard at
the power level of 10. I might keep the SS on the CO2 diet
for a while 😉
I noticed the new adaptor did not screw all the way down when I attached it to the CO2 tank, maybe about 1/4 inch
shorter. They might have extended the length of the pin in the bottom of the adaptor and redesigned the valve.

I don’t think it would be a lot but it would be possible to get a little more velocity out of the .177 SS on CO2 by turning the Top Hat down.
In fact, I plan on trying that for a different reason the next time I convert my 24″ .22 Condor back to 12″ .177 CondorSS.
My reason to want to cut down the Top Hat on the CO2 is that on HPA 1500 to 2000 PSI my CondorSS is sorta quiet since I vented the front bushing. But when I use CO2 there is a definite whoosh of excess CO2 escaping and that covers up the PING I could hear on HPA. But this excess gas escaping is wasteful and as we have seen with tuning for a bell shape or bathtub shape velocity curve, to much air will actually slow down the pellets on the beginning of the curve. CO2 is a lot bigger molecule than air and I’m guessing such an excess may have more effect on pellet speed.
The latest CO2 valve is the same valve stem/Top Hat as the newer Condor High Flow valve. It can be gently persuaded to come out the front of the CO2 tank. I have 4 such valve stems now and plan on popping in one set much lower and see what happens. Of course, you can simply adjust the Top Hat following the instructions found on this forum.
PS, I have reduced the Hammer weight but still get excess CO2 released with the 12″ .177 barrel.

This is my 2nd CO2 adaptor and I am begining to think there is a design flaw with the valve.
P.S. My SS has no problems whatsoever with the stock air tank. It hits hard and is a tack driver. I use the CO2
adaptor when I run out of air.

Well i just shot a 7.3 grain pellet .177 at 480 fps into a phone book and the pellet went to page 47. and it put a crack into the pages up to 100.

what is a .17 SS? never heard of that one.

That’s not right

That is right, it’s got ~ 800 psi behind it. Adujusting it won’t change how ‘stiff’ it is.

Very normal, the adapter depresses the pin valve. when you break the seal the CO2 flows until you unscrew it far enough.
Loosen the set screw on the side of the tophat and turn it out maybe a half turn at a time. Be careful to use the correct size allen key or you will strip it out. Also be careful when you snug it back down. Too much pressure and you will crush the valve stem.

I’m no expert but I do shoot my talons on CO2 exclusively.
1st question has to be whether or not you have access to a chrony and know the pellet speed. That along with barrel length and caliber would help in comparisons. CO2 is not going to deliver the same power as HPA and it’s not going to sound the same, especially if you have a good shroud.
On the power wheel. VERY little effect while running on CO2. It is measurable on mine but only in small increments. My PW is on 1 or 2. I only turn it up when it becomes obvious the gun needs to be cleaned, the extra umph buy’s me a little time before tearing it down.
The pressure holding the adapter and tank together probably isn’t the CO2. More likely friction. If I grabbed the tank on mine and tried to unscrew it, the tank would come off and the adapter would stay on the gun. I need a wrench to loosen the adapter from the frame.
If you are still convinced it’s shooting to slow – Acquired wisdom says;
1- clean the frame internals really well and use just a hint of a dry lube on re-assembly (with silicone grease in the right spots on the o-rings only) then retest.
2-try a different CO2 tank they’re cheap.
3- It’s been a while since I’ve seen complaints but the CO2 adapters were dogs for a long time. I went through 4 before the one I’m using now (knocks on wood). Of course the problem was leakage, not blockage. I have a spare I’ll sell but for the price I’d try a different CO2 tank 1st.
Tell me more about your gun and what you are trying to do with it.
More info is better, especially if you have no chrony.

What I meant is, the body of the older CO2 adaptor used to
stretch quite a bit lower when screwd tightly to the tank. It
seems about 1/4 inch shorter now with the new one. Sorry
for the confusion.
* The treads on the CO2 tank is still well covered after CO2
adaptor is screwed to the tank.
