Q:

Advice for lower fps – matador .25

Hi all, first post.

I purchased a standard matador .25 about 2 months ago and have given it some hard use as my primary hunting rifle.
So far I have taken down hares, pheasants, pigs and even a roe deer.

Anyway, it shoots too fast and pellets are all over the place at distances above 50 yards so I want to lower the speed a little (got it shooting at about 948fps).
I understand 890-900 is a good speed for this rifle together with JSB kings so that will be my target.

I already adjusted the HST about 3/4 of a turn resulting in speeds between 906-917fps… but today when doing a random shot through the chrono it was shooting at 958fps… no idea.

Im just looking at the quickest and most efficient way to keep speeds close to 890-900 with minimal spread and I was hoping I would NOT have to take the whole rifle apart to adjust the regulator…

I hope your experience will make it easier for me to adjust the rifle to my liking 🙂

1. Between which pressures (Bar) should my shots be measured?

2. Would it be enough to just concentrate on the HST or is modification of the regulator a must whenever the HST is modified more then x %?

3. If I would have to fiddle with the regulator, how much should I turn it in the first time if I want to dedicate no more then 2 occasions to adjusting the regulator?

4. If I turn regulator in, then I should turn HST out – 2 full turns, fill up air and work my way in, right?

I guess that would be enough for now… Im sure more questions will arise with your answers and opinions.

Thanks, Q

Hi, I started a new thread for that… first shot string after mods.

The air usage seems a little on the high side though so I guess I will be taking the rifle apart again, turn in the reg another 1/4 of a turn and see where that leaves me.

I’ll answer my own questions then 🙂 hope it will be useful for someone, someday.

* My regulator was marked with “130”,
* I turned it in (CW) 1/4 of a turn
* Turned my HST thingy 1 turn out (CCW)
* ended up turning it (HST) in a little for a total of a 4/5 of a turn in relation to the original position.

im now shooting at 888-896 until 110 bars… will come back with a full shot string and some fancy graphs tomorrow… maybe.
I really hope this tightens up my groups, will now that too tomorrow I hope.

Thanks oldgoat, Ted and numerous other forum members for giving me the confidence to take my gun apart in my quest for perfection.

I was kind of prepared for having to fiddle with the regulator 🙂 and yes I saw your youtube video a week or so ago as I was looking around for some useful info.

After taking the air out of the tube there is nothing else I need to do before adjusting the regulator, right?

The reason I want to make it as fast as possible is that I hand pump my rifles… yes, hand pump. So its not that easy for me to fill the sucker upp just one more time because Im curious about the effect of a 10th of a turn 🙂

So, the reg it is then… I go for a relative position of 7’o clock, turn out the HST thingy and start working my way towards 890-900.

From which highest pressure point (in bar) should I see the 890-900 and from which lowest point should I stop measuring?

Thanks

You can turn the HST screw down so that the gun will shoot in the 890s but, you will get an ugly bell curve and a fsp swing of 50-60 fps during a fill.

I know that you don’t want to hear this but; you will have to turn the regulator down (in, clockwise). You might want to try ½ turn in for starters. Use a black marker to mark the screw and housing for a reference point. That way you fill know where you started from.

Using the reference mark as 12 Oclock, most people here that were shooting in the 950 range, end up with the reg set between 6:30 and 7:30 in.

The reg adjustment isn’t that hard to do and gets a lot easier after the first try. Just be damn sure that you have all of the air out of the air tube before you take the 3 screws out!

If you haven’t watched my reg adjusting video, here it is.
