Q:

Airguns in Michigan problems

Does anyone know what the deal is with most of the online airgun dealers not shipping anything other than smooth bore BB guns or .177 rifles to Michigan? I called my local sheriff and he says as long as the gun is longer than 30 inches, it is not a registered firearm and its okay in Michigan.

Pyramyd air is the only place I can find that abides by the 30″ rule. Everyone else simply will not ship to Michigan unless its a .177 or smooth bore.

Even with a federal backround check and a fire arms ID card we have to get a permit for a pellet rifle in NJ

Thanks for the information. I have had air rifles shipped to me in the past and I just was wondering why so many dealers don’t ship here.

Fellow Michigander here…

The law says that anything less than 30″ OAL that shoots pellets (not BBs) requires a permit to purchase and delivery to an FFL, just like buying a handgun. Not many are aware that this includes .177s as well, even if it’s a smoothbore. The only thing that gets a free pass are BB guns.

I think a lot of dealers don’t want to take the chance that one of their $8/hour clerks ships out a sub-30″ “illegal” gun by mistake, so they just make a blanket rule and prohibit everything.

If you’re dead-set on buying from a particular dealer, you might want to phone them up and explain things to someone in charge… maybe they’ll bend their rules for you once they find out what the whole story is.
