Q:

Another tuning question (stumped)

Hey guys,
I have a cricket .25 and have always tuned it myself. Originally for Ernest’s measuring technique. I had the tune spot on at 905. I then saw the 1/16 pin method and thought maybe I could get a better tune. That method totally screwed me up. So, I tried to go back to my old tune and never could quite get it to where I wanted. It was very consistent, but my first shot was always slower.
So yesterday I decided to give it another go as my first tune all shots were within spread. So I tried the pin method again, with no avail so back to the measuring. Now I have been back and forth up and down, but I cannot seem to get a consistent string. I will shoot a full string tomorrow if I can but I’ll tell you this, now the first shot is faster and it drops every shot there after and gets kind of what I would consider all over the place, if given a min or two it will shoot fast again and slower after every shot etc.
I am trying to get back to 900 fps, does anybody know what bar should be adequate. The way I tune is: adjust the reg to as close to target speed as possible. then, slowly turn hsa until speed plateau’s. If at target speed, you are done. If not, go back and adjust the reg and do it all over again until target speed is reached.
My problem now is I cannot get any consistency to figure out which way to adjust. I replaced all o-rings in the reg as well.

Where is your Valve spring retainer set to …………….. if it’s at 1/2 turn I’d leave it there.
For every 1/2 turn in ether direction it will effect the maximum peck velocity by about 10-15 fps.
I would tune it within 1/2 – 1 turn and not less or more than.
I’d set it to 1/2 turn after contact and set the reg to be about 10-15 fps lower then the peak velocity you like, 900 fps ?

So the peck would be around 915ish and turn your HST down to 900 fps.
That will be where you’ll get the most efficacy for that speed, 900 fps.

I hope that make sense and helps u Sir ………..

p.s. Sorry for the slow respond to your post, I’m in the process of retiring from my day job ……… I’m very busy at this moment.

Bingo!!!!

So I resurfaced the face of the adjuster in the reg and put her all back together and first three shots 922, backed it down on the HSA to 900ish and fired about 10 times into my crony all between 899 and 902.

So, I’m a bit of a perfectionist, and wanted to get your thoughts. I normally would go back into the reg and turn it down just a hair so that I would top out at about 900-905 and leave it. Because when I put her back together I just wanted to see if the consistency can back, I turned it down to 900. I know it is probably shooting in the 925-930 range. Would you go back in and turn the reg down a hair?

The main benefit would be efficiency, and possibly a couple more shots.

edit: took it back apart and am now at 900 at the peak or real close to it.

Thanks GKU,
I actually watched those videos last night and am going to do that today. I will report my findings.

You might what to also check if there is an indent on the Delrin adjuster caused by this pin method.
You could also contact Ernest to set/check your reg for you.

are you talking about the valve inside the air tank? This all started with me messing with the reg, It was tuned well before I started tweeking it

Did you check the tension on the main valve spring, if it backed off or something is up with the valve pin you’ll get bad consistency. Mines locked with one of Ernest’s lock rings and set at 1+1/4 turns after contact, and shooting 900 flat.
