Q:

Any bowhunters on here?

Super OT, just curious to know if there are any other members on here that hunt with a bow?

I really enjoy hunting with my air rifles but LOOOVE to hunt with a bow… I recently bought some land in an area packed with wild boar and deer so it’s just the perfect playground for me.

I have been hunting with a compound (currently shooting an Elite Hunter) for a number of years but have been thinking about getting a recurve too as I enjoy development and simple/basic.

Is that a mongoose?

I was quite certain there would be a few archers on here 🙂

I as many others have problems with my shoulder(s) and in my case, throwing 20 or so arrows down the range will result in 4-5 days of shoulder pain… I really dont care though as it’s something I love to do. You could say I pay a high price but I consider it to be worth it.

Nomadic Pirate; awesome pictures… stick and string, WOW! seems you really enjoy yourself, must be a blast hanging out with you 🙂

I hunted for 20+ years with compound bows and recently switched to a crossbow. The combination of not having enough time to practice and our smaller deer herd sent me to the crossbow. I have never been bothered by other hunters, not even on public land. It’s nice having the woods to yourself.

Deer hunting is the one thing I don’t think I could ever give up. Even though the DNR and EHD have totally fucked up our deer herd, I still enjoy it.

I’ve been bowhunting for 15yrs. Started out carp shooting with a PSE Nova and then got hunting arrows in the fall. I moved up to a Matthews LX after a couple of years and had to switch to crossbow about 5 yrs ago. I use a Tenpoint crossbow and made an adapter for a Retriever reel and still shoot some carp in the summer but I feel like a “sixty gunner” on the boat.

I hunt spring turkey and deer in the fall in Minnesota but not as much as I like or as much as I used to. The metro places I used to hunt have disappeared so it’s down to a couple of trips up north until I go thru the bullshit to get a crossbow permit in Wisconsin.

That’s my only form of hunting big game. I enjoy the stalk.
Also competed in a lot of NFAA 3D tournaments ( BHFS A-class) when I was in Ca.
I use my Monster 6 at 72 lbs which I hunt with and only changed out tip to field point for events.
3D events have made me a better hunter. Being able to accurately judge distance on variety of sized targets over various terrain is essential to quick efficient kills.
I have tuned that bow to perfection along with a ton of practice and have won several dozen tournaments as well as just as many 2nd and 3rd place trophies over the last decade. Prior to that I use to shoot open class since late 80s with similar results.
Now I’m in Montana and field archery/3D is basically non-existent. Flip side is I’m on property so I can practice at home easily out to 150yds and hunting up here is prime. Not a bad trade off. They do have indoor league events here during winter, which is most of the year :-).
Also like to jump shoot game bird with my recurve. That’s fun but tough. Primarily because while I’m Rt handed I’m left eye dominant so I shoot compound lefty but I cannot for the life of me shoot a recurve instinctively lefty. I can shoot it very well when I hold and aim lefty but that doesn’t work when shooting pheasant and quail.

I bow hunted my entire life since 10 with my dad deer hunting in Wisconsin using a recurve. I started with a PSE compound in the 80s and now have a Bowtech with the modern bows. It is 3.8 lbs and 30 inches long. It amazing that something that looks like a toy can be so deadly and accurate. The technology has come a very long way. We hunt deer and turkey spring and fall firearm and bow.

I started out on a old 55bls Bear recurve and I never was that good with it but, I was a kid (to heavy to hold)lol. Many many years later I tried and now love to shot my compound. At this point no hunting just target and 3D but I am prepping for the day I get myself snugged in some sort of blind for a turkey hunt (neck shots only for me). I know I will loose some arrows and possibly distroy some others by going for neck. My thought process with that is “one clean ethical kill or go home empty handed” going home empty handed is ok with me if I cant hit my target properly.

I am also attempting to shot with no peep sight and NO I have not mastered that by any means at least for hunting.

I used to hunt with both recurve and compound, quail with the recurve and deer with the compound. Spent so much time doing it, most was “instinctive” or sighting down the arrow. I never used sights.

Due to losing 1/2 of my right wrist, bows are too destructive to what’s left of my hand. So, I have been using a Horton crossbow for years. It’s a more humane hunting method and packs one heck of a punch. Unlike regular bows, I had to learn how to properly re-fletch arrows, since they often zip right through deep enough to rip the fletching.

I enjoy bow hunting every much, I’ve hunted with both recurve, longbow and compound bows all are fun the long and recurves take a little more work but very satisfying to hunt with, I have to use a crossbow now, due to breaking my left elbow a few years back, not enough strength in it for the bows, I live in Iowa right now but will be moving to the Kansas City, Mo area later this year.
