Q:

Any machinists want to help a brotha out?

I just ordered a 14.5″ LW barrel. I need a skilled, at least semi-sober craftsman to cut it so it’ll drop into my cherished Marauder Pistol Bullpup. I’ll pay the shipping of course.. And I can also pay you for your time as long as I can afford it lol. And I won’t send you an email the next day asking if your done yet! My OEM barrel is serving me just fine, but I came across a fantastic deal on the LW and figured, what the hell..
And I figure I might get a couple responses because the guys on this forum are great people.. So I’d rather have the guy who lives in Kansas help me out rather than the fella from Zimbabwe.. Just to avoid shipping hassles.

Gene.. I’m curious what’s so unreasonable about that? I’m willing to help someone with their projects or around the shop just to learn and observe a skill. There are many retired mentors out there that wouldn’t mind the help and company. I’ve posted on a few machinist forums and have many offers from people who were just not close enough to able to take them up on it. One of the forums even has a volunteer/mentor section for just this-

I’m hoping to find someone local to me who has a lathe and is willing to teach me how to use one. I want to get my own medium sized lathed.. But only after I know how to use it.

This is unreasonable. You’d be asking that person for hundreds of hours of shop time. There are two reasonable approaches to learning how to use manual machine tools: take some Community College courses, or just buy your machine and start making mistakes. Having tried both routes, I found the latter much more effective (more machine time, removes a lot of the artificial constraints). Instead, look for someone you can ask questions or get occasional tutoring (on your machine) with something difficult. If you get that far, I can send you plenty of reading recommendations and online tutorials to get you started.

What’s wrong with your factory barrel. Just wondering. I have 2 prods and they are super accurate.

I don’t think the probe would fit through the magazine with the boring on it.

Damn! Nice catch, I didn’t think of that. Too bad.. I definitely wont sacrifice being able to use a magazine.

Hey…
Do you guys think it would be ok to have the bolt probe machined so you can put the oring on the probe?? Then the barrel wouldn’t need one..
I wonder if that would be ok?

I got my LW barrel from the FX/AOA giveaway. I pushed a pellet through it and it has very sharp and nice rifling markings.. It also slid through very smoothly until the last couple inches where it hit the choke. Looking down the barrel with a light also assures me that this barrel is likely to be a good one!

Same here – Turned out to be a really nice looking barrel and a total steal for 20 bucks! I also pushed a pellet through and you’re right, rifling seems really sharp, also gave it a good cleaning with Ballistol as well. The patches were coming out orange-red at first… blech. Bore looks fantastic now. Can’t wait to get it fitted. I think I also want to have the rear shroud mount bored out to fit. Thanks all for the heads up on pricing.

I wish Roy from Mountain Air could help you out- his work only cost $73 shipped, and it’s a damn shame I’m putting a shroud over the barrel… If you’re ever getting a barrel fitted w/o an oring inside the barrel, hit him up…

I am building a single-shot bullpup in .22 using a 1701P breech, which doesn’t have the oring in the barrel… but you’d have to get a custom bolt made. The 1701P breech does fit on the prod tube…

I did. They said it’ll be $125. I haven’t sent it off though yet, I’m hoping to find someone local to me who has a lathe and is willing to teach me how to use one. I want to get my own medium sized lathed.. But only after I know how to use it.
An interesting thing to note- MarmotMilita sells there hammer forged barrels for the Prod for $140 shipped.. I’d be more tempted to just buy one of their barrels for only $15 more. I thought it would only be around $50-$75 for someone to machine the LW barrel.. Wishful thinking I guess lol

Haggard, did you ever hear back from Marmot Militia?

I’m in the same boat… have a new barrel and looking for a machinist to whittle it down to fit a Prod…

Cool- glad I could help some!

Actually I had a different email for MarmotMilitaia.. I just went to the link you provided and sent them a new email. Thanks again.. I’ll update once I hear back from them.

Wicked air rifles used to be MarmotMilitia right? If so, then yes.. I emailed 5-6 days ago and haven’t heard back. They should be able to do it as they make their own hammer forged barrels for the Prod..

Ugh, I hate to tell you, but Roy doesn’t have the tool to do the small oring groove inside the barrel that the prod has… I just found out last night when he emailed me back about my 1701P bullpup build. I’m sorry to get your hopes up!!! I’ve been trying to get on the TAG to let you know, but it’s being weird. This might be why no one has stepped up. I’ll see if I can’t root up a machinist for you!

Have you tried Wicked Air Rifles? http://www.wickedairrifles.com/ Send them an email too.

Looks like I might.. I’m shocked I didn’t get any responses. It seems like there’s a lot of guys with lathes on here.
Would I have to send him my Prod barrel as well as the blank? So he can basically duplicate it. I’ve never sent anything off to be machined, so I don’t know the process. Do you have an idea of what his turn around time is? Thanks Caboose
