Q:

Anybody ever considered making a permanent frame extension

By combining a cut off AF frame to a Talon frame?

I decided to try it.

I have two 25 LBT’s. A very hand 17 inch carbine doing arond 120 FPE with Dyotats valve and a Condor 22 inch made from spare parts which included a tired often drilled Condor frame with soon to be stripped out bushng holes.

Two days ago, I junked the 25 LBT rifle, decided to put the barrel on a custom Bam 51 I am working on and cut the tube off the frame in front of the PW window.

My plans are to make a permantent frame extension by adding the Condor front end tube to the Talon frame, using the 17 inch barrel and using a inset like what Subsonnic makes.

Sort of a steroided Talon SS if you will.

Well, the idea of the entire thing is to have a non-detachable shroud, so it will probably be joined with a nonthreaded bushing that is pressed into place and then staked or pinned inplace or set screws used and then the holes filled in to make it non-removable.

then the joints on the rail will be filled in and conoured to resemble a solid piece.

Is Dyotat threading the frame halves so they screw together, or perhaps bore one half and turn down the other then weld? I know he handles aluminum pretty well.

Cant wait to see what this looks like. Hope it turns out straight and true for you. I considered doing this myself but I couldn’t force myself to begin the saw strokes.

Be interested to see how it balances, its going to be much more front end heavy which never hurts IMO.

Roach,

We understand what you are doing.

As I have said it has been done before and there are different ways to go about it.

RS,

Everybody seems confused on what I am doing.

Yes I did cut the frame into two pieces.

But for right now, I am adding the forward part to a talon frame so that it will be a super long Talon SS.

I have the cut off section with all the trigger assembly in it in my spare parts bin for now.

I have the Talon frame and the forward tube in a box to send to DYotat, he will attach them together permanently.

Then I will put it together with a longer version of Subs insert and use Dyotats valve for my 25 LBT with the 17 inch barrel.

RC:
Walt in HI is the man for frame threading, he already has built the tooling for the job
on threading barrels in…no, wouldn’t do that
my suggestion is to thread your frame externally for the AR15 barrel nut then have a custom one piece barrel bushing fabricated that would be similar to the locking collar on an AR barrel
already have frames set up this way, just have not had time to finish the work out

Seemed like a good end for a stripped frame.

But what Dave says about threading the frame and screwing barrels in lounds like a cool idea also.

Cutting up the old lady or the frame extension ❓

RC

Yep,

A few years back a couple of guys bought new frames from AF and built a new gun and used their old guns front end.

Oh right, now that’s going to be a VERY long gun haha

Dave,

Actually I am using the forward tube that the barrel bushings would be in as permanent extension on a Talon frame.

It will resemble a very long Talon SS.

RC

Could you post some pictures when your done?

From what I think you are trying to achieve, I just did this about 2 days ago.

I cut the frame on my Talon just in front of the trigger group housing, and threaded it, I can now thread barrels in and out of the frame, I could add an M4 type rail system but for now I’m adding a free float tube and then a suppressor.

Dave

Which old lady parts are worth saving?

Cutting up the old lady or the frame extension ❓

RC

Oh okay…

So yes it has been done.

i’ve got an old lady that’s about outlived her usefulness. never thought about cuttin’ her up for spare parts, though. might have to give that a try.
