Q:

Anyone selling .223 Conversion Kits?

If so, who and what kind of performance are they getting?

I know Vincent Van Gerven had one and it shot pretty well at range…

Tony

.217/8 is what we were looking at for the .22 program when we thought we might be able to scale the .25 slugs down easily. .217 supports an air rifle .22, not really intended for a converted pb .223. I suspect there are molds that will cast better sized slugs for the .223 barrels, there just hasn’t been demand (in any meaningful quantity) for that.

Interesting.

Cant wait to hear how that works out.

Ive considered turning down an old 10/22 barrel just to see if it shoots EJ’s worth a damn. The barrel is just collecting dust in my cabinet, and will never be used on the original rifle anyway.

I have a barrel about 26″ long with a 1 in 12″ twist rate. The available calculators say this should stabilize a .223 dia 40 to 45 gr cast bullet all the way down to 500 fps. I ordered it from Shilen Barrel Co. as a .750″ dia blank and got it turned to fit the Condor.
I am getting some more of Bob Vogel’s 43 gr hollow points. I tried them before ( sized to .217″ ) in the stock .22 barrel, but the twist is too slow to stabilize them, so they wobbled their way to the target and cut slightly oval holes. He makes them dead soft and they expand quite well at Condor velocities, but grouped about an inch at 43 yards. That might have been acceptable for short range hunting, but I wanted better accuracy and more range. I have expectations of much better results this time around, but good or bad, I’ll post what I get.
Bob’s bullets work well in my 9mm Career, the twist/bullet length works fine. The .217 bullets carry lots of energy down range, but they’re too long to stabilize at the factory twist rate.
The .223 diameter probably won’t shoot Eun Jin pellets worth a darn, but it just might. I should know in a few days whether I’ve wasted some money, or built a better rat trap… heh heh…. hoping for the latter.

I’ll be evaluating a .223 barrel in a few days… in a Condor, and shooting soft cast bullets. When I have results I’ll post them.

Sounds great, keep us posted!’what barrel/length and twist rate and bullet are you using/testing?

Tony
