Q:

Armasight Orion 5x Gen 1+ VS ATN Spartan MK-410

Been doing some research on these two low priced Gen 1 night vision scopes and the Armasight Orion really overwhelms the Spartan in the user reviews. It is clearer and has a true 5x magnification and a better illuminator according to the reviews. Anyone have one of these?

I ordered one from Opticsplanet for $479. I got a free hat. 😀

Nevermind. 😆 😆 😆 Opticsplanet screwed up and credited me a refund to my credit card and didn’t ship anything back. 😆 I have not used them in a few years and it appears they have grown beyond their own good customer service. They apologized but I took the opportunity to switch bases completely and order a modified IZH 46M VIP MSP match gun for the coming Cicadae’s with the refund. 😀 You can see that thread over in Other Guns. In the meantime I picked up a true 500 lumen red bulb LED tactical light from China direct that uses two 18650 LI batteries but still attaches to the gun for portability. That is my new tool for the coons at night for now. 😛

Opticsplanet is sending me back a new scope even though they claim my return tests out fine – user error or loose connection? I assume it was shipping? An Armasight tech walked me through the simple operations and we could not get it fully functional via the phone. Who knows? 😕

Well Opticsplanet sent a return label so no shipping charges for the customer. 🙂 I spoke to Armasight and they said the power unit for the light tube is dead but they are all powered up at the factory before they are shipped to the dealers or drop-shipped and while it is more than likely a simple connection issue from handling (but they things should be able to handle some significant recoil) they have to take them apart to repair. Anyway, it went back to Opticsplanet for a new replacement. Lets see how #2 does. I should have it in a week or so.

Boy did I speak too soon. My Orion 5X arrived DOA from Opticsplanet. The unit appears to turn on and the reticle works great but that is where it ends. No green glow or light enhancement going on. Dark like a moonless night. I also don’t think the illuminator is coming on but maybe you can’t tell without the sight working. Opticsplanet already sent me a Return Authorization but no one else is available on Saturday to discuss and Armasight isn’t open either today. 😮 I am going to ask them to make sure the next one at least turns on completely. 😯

Armasight seems to have fixed some of the issues ATN has like moving POI. From what I read the case is the same as ATN but the internals are different. ATN QA seems to be more hit and miss. I got to look through a Spartan 410 it in the dark using the illuminator and it was much better than I expected from all of the reviews out there. Certainly not a Gen 3 but very usable none-the-less. They guy replaced the illuminator with a stronger Streamlight and I thought it was pretty good to about 100 yards. It would be easy to distinguish hogs, coyotes, and raccoon sized game. I hear snow can make it tough.

Sorry to hear that. Hopefully the next one is better. Keep us posted!

Armasight do some very nice kit for the money. I was hoping to get my hands on one of there Spark units.
