balistic testing of various 22Cal pellets

First I would like to say merry Christmas and thanks to all the members who make this site what it is…so I have decided to make some homemade balistics gel and do some comparisons of a few pellets that are available in my area…it won’t be till sat the 26 before ill have time to do a few test shots..but I guess what I’m getting at is anyone interested in me posting detailed results or has this been done to death…. 😈

Well, that’s good then, your results likely match your hunting range.

25 yrds its farthest i can go and stay in my back yard where the neighbors cant see… 😈

What was the range from muzzle to target?

ok…..so i finaly got the chance to go out and re-shot the crow mags and the predators and what i found was very interesting.. the predator still passed thru the 3.5 inch thick gel target but left a devistating wake where as the crow mag actually stoped in the gel(bairly) and moved the 1lb 9oz target….her are some pics sorry they dont photograph so well with out the rite equip….

so i think what i have decided is that for any thing smaller than a larg crow its the predators all the way but on bigger prey its definetly crow magnum territory

What I’m thinking is that the predator did what the crow mag did but continued to deform all the way back…I’m thinking that with higher fps or thicker target the crow msg would look like the predator

Crowmag looks like it deformed the best, but the preds are much more accurate at the longer distances. I tried the Crowmags in .25 and had better luck throwing them…!

Plus the second mold is ready for testing so if I get the time today I will give this test. Second run but with a thicker gell target to see if I get similar results

Here is a link to a pic of the pellets…the crow mag is on the left the predator is in the middle and the rws supper dome is on the left…..the lip on the back of the crow mag is from it veering down into my pellet box since it didn’t travel in a straight line in the gel….and using the soft crony I fling the super domes out at 980fps over 100ft from muzzle to target …and I did this test for that very reason because I’ve had them flatten out in a crow too but now I think that there are other forces at play that I don yet understand…..I am rite now recasting a bigger batch of gel and am going to try it again since the rws super domes passed thru on this test……..

how fast were you shooting them? because i have had rws domes flatten out completly before.

I should have at least one picture of the pellets after the fact by the end of the night

Ok so I took four shots with four different pellets.
1 crow mag. 18gr
2 polymag predators 16gr
3 rws superdomes 14.5gr
4 Benjamin discovery h.p. 14.3gr
All dimensions were taken from the head of the pellet and for the length its just as it sounds
1 oal. .217 or 5,5mm dia of .330 or 8,3mm
2 Oal. .217 or 5,5mm dia of .274 or 6,9mm
3 oal. ,256 or 6,5mm dia of .22 or 5,5mm
4 oal. .196 or 5 mm. Dia of .22 or 5,5mm

So to explain a little.. The crow mags. Flattened out almost completely at the head with little skirt deformation.
The predators head actually folded back and arround the body of the pellet with a fair amount of skirt deformation.
The rws’ were the control and remained mostly unchanged
And the discovery h.p.’s the head was unchanged and the skirt folded up and to the side every time.

So that leaves me with the crow mags and the predators…..to only real difference that they showed was the larger cavity of the predators and deeper and more erratic path of the crow mags due to the almost completely flat face upon impact

Shooting stuff with stuff never gets boring.
