Q:

Barrel Extension?

My 12″ barrel is illegal to hunt with as some of you may remember. It has to be at least 16″. What technically constitutes the barrel? Could I weld some metal with an opening to “extend” the barrel and say it’s legal?

I don’t want to spend on a new barrel if I don’t have to.

Jool, if you keep the temps down you can spot weld an extension onto the barrel. But you’ll probably need a lathe to true the barrel and extension so they are coaxial. Don’t weld a bead at the joint, just do a heavy spot weld, turn barrel, let it cool, and spot again every 120 degrees, try to keep the thermal loading even around the barrel circumference. If you do very light spots it won’t affect accuracy. Also don’t weld on the very end, have the extension overlap at least a half inch in and weld the joint there so there is more metal to dissipate the heat. It should be very brief tacks, not a weld bead. If you want me to do it, just send me the parts and pay for shipping (I’m in hawaii dude).

I knew it was coming. I’ll be watching for anyone selling a barrel for a good price.

Last thing you want to be doing is welding anything to your barrel 😯
You could extend the frame, but that has nothing to do with the barre!
There’s always barrels going for sale in the For Sale section.
You’re gonna have to open that creaky wallet…. 😉
