Be honest, does anyone do this?

The feed of the milling machine may be designated in inches per minute or millimeters per minute The milling feed is determined by multiplying the chip size (chip per tooth) desired (see Table 8-3 in Appendix A), the number of teeth on the cutter, d the revolutions per minute of the cutter.

Example: the formula used to find the workfeed in inches per minute.

IPM = CPT x N x RPM
IPM = Feed rate in inches per minute.
CPT = Chip per t
N = Number of teeth per minute of the milling cutter.
The first step is to calculate the spindle speed before the feed rate can be calculated.

The second step is to calculate the feed rate.

IPM = CPT x N x RPM
= 0.005 x 2 x 2,400
= 24

Therefore, the RPM for a l/2-inch-diameter end mill machining aluminum revolves at 2,400 RPM and the feed rate should be 24 inches per minute.

The formula used to find workfeed in millimeters per minute is the same as the formula used to find the feed in IPM, except that mm/min is substituted for IPM.

Thanks Xaloc. I’m sure I’ll bugger a few tools before I get the hang of it again, but I’ll enjoy doing it.

I just figured a highish speed and slow feed with plenty of suds would make the nut. It’s not like I’ll be in any rush, trying to meet productivity targets or suchlike, and that’s presumably where the danger lays?

Just do some searching online. There are tons of charts and guides and most of them dont match each other ). The biggest thing you have to watch out for is overheating your cutting tools. You can take a razor sharp tool and turn it into mush in seconds.

Is there any literature available with rough guides for that stuff? You’ve got it in your head, a noob like me will need a page to refer to.

To be “honest” I know about what speeds for what materials my end mills should be turning. I use that as a starting point but from there I adjust the speed based on how it “feels” to me. Those charts and formulas are for ideal conditions and my machine is far from ideal.
