Q:

BENCH REST

Hi guys,
I see all the fantastic groups that people are shooting. when my R3M .25 was new, it worked fine for a while at 25Y. Later at 50Y – 65Y, the groups opened up to 4″ – 6″. I figured i would get 1000 rounds through it before I made any adjustments. @ 600 rounds through it and I noticed a severe spiral. I could see the pellet path when I shot through shaded areas to the target. I was shooting 960 fps (was 930 when new). Ive cleaned the barrel & adjusted the HST and am @ 910 but I i’m shooting an occasional 1″ or less group at 65 yards with an occasional spiral & or one that goes straight but 2″- 3″ low, or left, and a rare right. I have just over 1000 rounds through it and was thinking it must be operator error, unless maybe lowering the speed even more might make a difference.

I decided to look for a good solid bench rest to see what the problem is, can anyone recommend one that works good? and would you rest in on the front of the stock or the air tube – or does it not make a difference?

Thanks guys

Like Gerard, I use the Caldwell Deadshot Field Pod; I got the larger, magnum sized tripod because the height is more adaptable. On uneven terrain, they are great and both Edguns and Crickets shoot well from the stock mounts/prongs. For hunting with long wait periods (post and wait), it’s easy to keep the gun ready for minimal movement when it’s time to shoot.

i use these, i made do with home made stuff for ever , when i tried these, i wish i had bought them years earlier, i have two sets now.

and build you a nice table , 2×6 or heavier ,,you can make do with a lighter table but you need something that will not move at all for a dead still bench

anything that looks light weight is light weight , and will not be able to take all error out of the equation as far as movement and let you see what you rifle and loads will do.

i shoot off a steel barbecue grill, all steel and heavy , does not move, you cant make it move.

if you can sit and wiggle your bench , thats adding error to the equation

I think you should try it, very stable

I use Caldwell Deadshot Fieldpod very nice in the field, and sand bags for a steady bensh rest shooting.

Thanks Gerard, I use jsb pellets and have 5 more tins of them. I’ll try sorting a few pellets & playing with the hst, and see if it helps – I still want to try it with a bench rest. Do you have any recommendations? I saw a Caldwell Lead Sled FCX Shooting Rest on amazon – looks really good but kinda pricey.

Hi
You didn’t mention what pellet you are using.
I hade a few spirals shooting my r3m 25 long with jsb 25, now i am using h&n barracuda at 870fps with no problem.
Spirals is a problem of pellet and speed, check the pellets you are using for deformation and consistency in shape/weight.
