Q:

Best bullet molds

Hey guys, just wanted to ask what are the best bullet molds for .25 , 9mm and 50cal or other caliber casted bullets. What kind of velocities, groupings did you get with what type and weight of bullet.

I use 20-1 lead to tin for the .452 bore. For the 25 I was advised to go a little harder by a seasoned caster, and when I tried #2 alloy I got much better accuracy.

I buy my alloys thru Rotometals, if you order $100.00 and live in the continental US they ship for free and they sell several different alloys from dead soft lead to super hard alloys.

About casting for the 25, there are alot of varibles, mainly tho the bullet to barrel diameter matching and it should match perfectly for airguns, unlike PB cast bullets where you want to be a little under and let the bullet upset to the bore.

LW barrels range from .251 for the older barrels to .255 for the latest batch of barrels, and this is not counting the choke which is a few thousands under those measurements.

Unless your already set up for casting or your going to cast 25’s by the thousands, or where you live makes it hard to obtain 25’s, I would highly recommend Jerry’s slugs.

At first for me and my application, most of Jerry’s were too heavy, although just about anybody who shoots them likes the 60 to 70 grains ones, but Jerry is now casting 50 grain versions of his slugs so he seems to have most of the weights covered.

If I were doing it and only shooting a few hundered per month, I would slug my bore, contact Jerry and see what he has for 25 caliber bullet diameter and buy from him if he has a match.

THe .452 bore tho is a different matter, altho Jerry does sell some great bullets in that diameter, I have shot seconds he sent me to test and they gave me well under an inch at 50 yards.

It is just that I get a satisfaction of making my own air gun bullets and with the larger bores, I truely like to do it myself.

Thank you Roachcreek for the ton of info I will take it into account when I will be buying my molds. Also thx for the correction on casting and swaging (corrected my mistake in the first post). Maybe I should compile all the info from the casting topics the forum and make it a sticky, after I got enough info?

Roachcreek what kind of lead did you use (98-99% pure)?

I have only tried 2 molds for the 25, a Lyman and a RCBS, I have a LEE coming. THe RCBS was the best quality and so far has shot the bust, it was destroyed in alteration, if my Lee does not shoot well I will go back and order another RCBS and get it altered to the correct size.

I got 850 to 1025 FPS with the RCBS 51 grain bullet and mostly under an inch at 36 yards, but altering it to a larger diameter would improve grouping.

I have not tried a 357 or a 9mm for airguns, but Lyman or RCBS make great molds for those calibers, the RCBS would be the best of the two.

For my 45 Ranger I bought a custom mold from Accuratemolds, actually two of them for the same bullet. They cast out at over 400 grains and I get into the 800 FPS realm. Accuracy is phenomenal and the quality of the molds are superb and at the same cost of a RCBS factory mold.

I have a Lee mold, a 6 cavity 25 caliber coming, but mostly stay away from them due to questionable quality, altho I do have a 45 round ball mold that does work fine.

Now one other thing, bullets poured and dropped from molds are refered to as cast, swaging bullets is forming them in a die under pressure with a press of some sort.

Hope this helps,

Roachcreek
