Best pellet/ball for MAXimum pentration?
Hi, if you were interested in the “maximum penetration” what would be the best design for a pellet, or would a round ball be best? I’m thinking of getting a Talon SS really soon, andI looked at the Eu Jin and the kodiak. To me, the kodiak, although it isn’t as heavy, looks like it would penetrate better due to the pointed design, whereas the Eu Jin is pretty flat and round.
Am I off here?
Also regarding round balls, I read recently where they penetrate better than pellets do.

Sorry I forgot to mention caliber; talking 22″ here, I’ve about decided the 25″ won’t work for me that well (very long with a suppressor, among other things).
Ok so sounds like balls are out. As for EJ’s being to heavy, I thought that a bullet that was heavier but traveling slower made for BETTER penetration – ?
I have tested both the EunJin 42.8gr and the Beeman Kodiak’s in .25 and the EunJin’s are the king of maximum penetration. The Kodiak are better in the accuracy in long range shooting. I can get the 42.8gr EJ’s to shoot OK inside 30 yards with the hole setup doing 90fpe. I’m working on a range for the big EJ’s at right now and at 23yards it will blow through 2″ of wood.
If you get them going fast they will soar through any animal you shoot them at. My .25s easily punch through 2x4s at 20 yards. But going really slow it obviously won’t penetrate as much. My gun doesn’t like kodiaks much, so I never use them. I only use eun jins. Shoot in the 850fps range for squirrels, and bigger game I crank it up to 950fps.

Lama you are making me very impatient for my .25 cal barrel which is is now off (along with my whole stinking gun, which means that right now I have nothing to shoot) getting fitted/tweaked. As an aside, I shouldn’t bitch, the vendor is makeing it right rather than telling me to go piss up a rope. The vendor originally wanted me to send the frame off when I bought the barrel so he could fit it and make sure it shot well, however one doesn’t send ones gun off in the middle of deer season for any reason, and I refused. He sent the .25 Lothar barrel, & sure enough, displaying that irrational individuality that makes us all love and hate our guns, something didn’t mesh, and it wasn’t very accurate (.6″ @ 29 Yds at best).
So I was stuck using .22 cal. I plunked a couple of Javelinas at around 40 yards with 950 fps .22 cal. Kodiacs, one a side head shot slightly below a line between the ear and the eye, and one slightly above smooth between the eyes. Both Bounced Off! Well, they didn’t literally bounce off, but they sure didn’t get in to the cranial cavity. Not even dazed. No Javelina stew.
Based on that I passed on any whitetail doe cropping with the .22, and I wonder if the .25 will be enough power. Anyone out there know?

I’ll put my vote on the kodiaks/H&N Baracuda’s….They are the most accurate in about every gun I have other than JSB’s….I use Jsb’s on feathered game or where over penetration is a factor….I took a crow at 75 yds not long ago broadside and got a thru and thru with the kodiaks
Gotta agree with Bodhi on this one, all three barrels for my TSS (12″ .177 & .22, 24″ .22), as well as my .177 B50 love Kodiak/Barracudas. Excellent accuracy both long and short range, and plenty of power. The EJ’s offer a little more smack down, but you have to have the velocity to get it, if I use them, it’s only with my long barrel, and velocity at around 900 fps. Interestingly enough, I’ve found that I can push Kodiaks to around 1000 fps and still get good accuracy. Has to be the good BC. BTW, I have a Blodnob valve in my Talon. Later.

I forgot to mention i use kodiaks primarily, i try others on occassion. And quite a few when i first got my rig. Kodiaks have excellant downrange energy retention this is the BC of a pellet. any squirrel i shoot with a Kodiak the pellet is a pass through, so i have to watch my backstop carefully for backyard shooting. JSB’s, Wolverines(sportsman warehouse), Airgun of Airizona, Air Arms are all JSbs and at 16g do fine in a TSS. I just find Kodiaks to be a all around perfect pellet so thats what i shoot.
You didn’t mention caliber, or I just misssed it! .177, haven’t a clue, But my springer likes cp’s. In the .20. So far, Crossman. Higher BC than Kodiak, and heavier. But this is exactly the opposite in the .22. With the 18″ bbl. .22, now in my SS. Along with the hot rodded valve, it will blow right through a 2×4. It hits HARD!!!

Kodiaks for me.
Eun Jins like Bodi said kinda go a bit slow in the SS so rangefinding becomes very important. Piledrivers have very good penetration because its a solid slug, but they are even heavier than Eun Jins and can be hard to find and are $$.
Kodiaks suit my needs for the toughest game in all my .22 PCP airguns plus they have the weight and quality to make long range shots possible too.
You have to consider pellet/projectile weight, in the TSS EunJins shot like garbage there to heavy for the valve. Round balls would do well, but few companys make them and the weight i don’t know. The heaviest pellet for the TSS is the 21g kodiak. Penetration is one thing over penetration is another to consider. All depends on your shooting range, location, distance, target. That sort of thing. The Kodiiak has the best BC of ay production pellet out there if i’m not mistaken. I have seen penetration tests where round ball beat other pellets. But rounds don’t shoot well out of every barrel/gun. I’d like to test some in the future.

The EunJins will not group well at 600-650fps which is about what you’ll get with the TSS and standard talon valve, even modded i doubt they will group well. you need to get them up around 800fps for any kind of decent groups. Must be something with the design of the pellet. I tried them with my TSS when i first got it and was lucky if i could hit the paper. It was evident that they were keyholeing. Trust the guys who have spoken, Kodiaks will do just fine for you, cheaper as well. You might even want to purchase a box of CPs Crosman Premiers 625 pellets for $16, Kodiaks are $9 for 200, and EunJins $8 for 125 per Straight shooters.
