Q:

Black Powder Reloading Question…

I know we have a couple BP experts in the crowd and I was working on reloading some 45LC cowboy action rounds with Pyrodex BP pistol substitute.

In the nippled cylinder I run between 20 and 30 grains (by volume).

Would I use the same quantity (starting at the low end) for brass loads?

I know that for 45ACP, which is smokeless you don’t need hardly any powder, like 5 grains. I’m just a bit hesitant to fill the whole case…

synopsys get a loading manual , no guessing .

Try to find loading data for Sierra’s 65 grain SPBT .224″ round in their own manual…! It’s my favorite ball for my 223 and I had to cook up my own load…

I have the Hogdon Pyrodex reloading charts for bp it says 30-35 grains…

Swiss powder? I’ll have to give some a try, I found Goex to be really dirty…

Synosys,

Seriously, I could never get the velocity out of Pyro like I could Swiss.
Swiss powder is expensive but sure good stuff. I used it in 38 S&W, 45 LC and 45/100.

I used a card wad on the 45/100 but just the naked bullet lubed with SPG on the pistol rounds. I used goex in the 12 guage, but accuracy was never a problem with the 12 guage.

I waited for good substutes but they were always too unstable for my liking, pyro not included of course.

Right now i’m having a blast! 😀

Smokeless powder is just a passing fancy and will never catch on.

Five years from now it will be in the same league as bell bottom pants.

Thanks RC! Would you use a lighter charge of smokeless or just get a different pistol? 😆

I would just use a case full if it was black. Pyro is a poor substitute for the real thing, it gives neither better performance or better resistance from fouling.

To clean that smoke pole between stages spray it with windex and then spray it with alcohol.

You will find after doing that the pyro is a complete waste of money.

Sort of like fucking with a rubber with the end cut out.

I lived that life for several years, lived with out power lines and in the only house in 110 square miles, rode for days on end without seeing a car. Black was the only thing I burned with the exception of wood for cooking.
