Bloomberg: The National Guard in Coney is a bad idea
Mayor Bloomberg has snubbed Borough President Markowitz’s impassioned plea to bring the National Guard to Hurricane Sandy-scarred Brooklyn — arguing that approving the Beep’s request would be a waste of federal manpower and turn the borough into a police state.
“We don’t need it,” Mayor Bloomberg said on Wednesday during a press update on the city’s ongoing Hurricane Sandy cleanup. “The NYPD is the only people we want on the street with guns.”Markowitz demanded the National Guard’s help just an hour before Bloomberg’s press conference, claiming that the NYPD and FDNY are “brave — but overwhelmed” by all the challenges Sandy brought when it visited the borough on Monday night: flooding, power outages, and looting.“All of our resources have been stretched to the limit,” Markowitz said. “In the name of public safety we need to send more National Guard personnel into Coney Island, Manhattan Beach, Gerritsen Beach, Red Hook, and any other locations.”
Markowitz hopes that the sight of an armed soldier would deter criminal activity in the still-unaccessible evacuation zones — such as the rash of break-ins that took place in Coney Island hours after Sandy kissed the borough goodbye — but the Mayor said the NYPD was more than capable of handling the job.

NOW is the time for a valid 3rd party to rise up and take the lead.
I looked for that this time around, but found them sorely lacking. Well, at least in this state anyhow (MN). I then looked with some hope at the Tea Party influence in the Republican party here… but soon saw that it was present…. but not strong enough to enact the real changes needed in the party. It had an effect, but not enough. I hope the “Tea Party” people ALL drop the Republicans and find a good Independent to back. Maybe Ron Paul and his son can make headway and gather some good candidates with them into a valid option. I have been either an alternate or a delegate for my voting area (township) since moving out here in 1988. I have gone as far as the District level, but not the State level and only because my work always conflicted with the dates. This time around, I held back my intentions until the very end… wanted to hear all options and not have a pre-determined candidate in mind until I had heard as much as I could about each one. The support for Ron Paul was strong, but Mitt edged him out at our district level….. I cast mine for Paul…. Even though I was already fairly certain that he did not have enough votes, I wanted it to at least be close to send a message. All it did was make some people sweat a bit at the thought that Ron might actually pull it off. The message was lost fairly quickly from what I observed.
It is interesting to go to these things… you see some genuine “heros” and some real dipshits too….

In Florida, for example, Johnson got 0.5%, or 44,684 votes. Obama won by 73,858. Ohio was won by about 100,000 votes; Johnson got under 50,000. Virginia was won by over 100,000, Johnson got 30,000. Colorado was won by over 100,000, Johnson got some 30,000 again, and he claims he took them from Obama (which means he did nothing, natch.)
Pennsylvania had a 300,000 vote margin of victory, again, Johnson was an insignificant under-50k.
