Q:

Bolt Bounce

Lately I’ve noticed that my bolt handle will bounce out of the side notch and back to the center when I fire my Talon SS. I have my top hat set to .095. What’s causing my bolt handle to rotate? And is there a fix for it? Is this causing a fluctuation in performance?

Wildfire sent me some photos of how he extended the notch to alleviate the problem. I’d like to avoid cutting into the frame if possible.

I have this same “issue” as well.

But I found leaving the bolt centred shrunk my groups incredibly so I don’t even bother pushing the bolt to either side.

2-3 fps drop is good I’d wouldn’t worry about it jumping out then.

ya, try the washer you can custom tune the washer by sanding it’s thickness down if you need to.
Also the O-ring can be sanded down as well, but as a later resort.

Search the post it’s been done before.

GKU,

Thanks for the info! My gun has about 6,000 rounds through it, so I’m guessing it’s pretty well broken in. You mentioned strange chrony strings. I’m assuming you mean sudden drop in muzzle velocity and then a jump back to the normal string. What do you consider a “normal” chrony string. I’ve noticed a 2-3 fps drop in muzzle velocity per shot over a 20 shot string. Typically, I start with 2,500 psi and end up with 2,000 – 2,100 psi. I have the power wheel set to 2. I like your idea about the O-ring/ washer set-up and will give it a try.

If your gun is fairly new I would wait up a bit it may go away by itself. But it usually causes no problems unless you notice strange crony strings. To compare use a rubber band to hold the cocking knob over to one side.

Sometimes if the top hat is to tight against the breech when closed, where it slightly compressing the top hat in, can cause jumping out too.
The opposite can cause this also.

Is there a gap between your top hat and the breech ?

I put a nylon washer behind the top hat with a o-ring behind to bring it up against the breech. The thickness of the washer depends on your speed setting and or O-ring size. When I cock and turn mines into the slot it makes a click and it has no gap between the top hat face and the breech.
