Q:

boring bar on the cheap

well, cutting tools taking too long to arrive so made a boring bar tonight. Got a carbide insert for a brake lathe from the local auto parts store for 4 bucks.

works like a charm.

Try taking an endmill and mounting it in your tool post. Line up a cutting edge to center and Viola….a rigid boring bar!

I tried that, but when I started boring steel, it was time to step up and get a real boring bar.

I expect the same with steel, but have a “good set” ordered just didn’t want to wait.

Seems as though you are correct. works great for relatively shallow cuts (up to .030 or so in Ali) but when pressed will flex and chatter. Beats waiting for the USPS though, just takes longer with slower feed and lighter cuts. I’m sure on a much harder metal the results would not be as good.

Is that a steel bar? Flex is the bad thing when it comes to boring bars and even the steel ones flex. I learned not long ago that the taper on boring bars is there for a reason. They get thinner along the shaft to cut down weight and reduce droop at the cutter end. It seemed crazy to me, I would have thought a thicker bar would be a more ridged bar. Thats what I read anyway.
