Bought a JDS regulated tank

Well, I took a leap of faith and bought one of the JDS Airman’s tank (birthday on Friday so that’s the wifes present to me) and regulator (2000 psi) and I have been playing around with it tonight. Shot a whole bunch of pellets with a combination of JSB’s but mostly Kodiaks (.22). After playing around with different power wheel settings and not changing the top hat on the co2 adapter here is a 27 shot chrony string. The FPS is not what I get with the condor tank charged to 2000 PSI (Kodiaks 980 FPS) so wondering if the unit I got is actually a 2000 PSI unit but the numbers are good for target shooting. John is a good guy and he seems to care about his customers and offered to exchange it with a new one if I felt it wasn’t right. In my book that makes him a stand up guy and not someone who just hangs the phone up on you. Anyway, here are the numbers and they were shot with a TalonTunes .22 with 24” barrel, 90g hammer and a power wheel setting of 8.

I shoot with a butt under the tank not on the end as a stock model. I do not have a problem using it in this manner since most shooting is target practice.
An under tank butt might work fine with the longer tank. MTC

That string is from 21.1Gr. Kodiaks and I agree with needing a little more speed with them. The question is where I can gain that extra from. Does the co2 adapter need to be modded or the regulator? I haven’t played with top hat settings yet and when I get some more air this weekend I can try that angle. Hopefully I can get some extra.

As it is now it will work great with a bigger bottle and using JSB’s and should make a great target setup.

22CI tank is a little bit too long (mounted on a co2 adaptor, the reach to the trigger gets a bit longish for normal sized humans).
22 Ci tank:

Found the 13CI tank a little short…not much…added a brass on/off to give it another 1″, but i have long arms (not long enough to be comforatable with the 22″ tank, but enough to need a little more length with the 13CI tank).

But I’m only running them at 1250PSI, looking for hot weather co2 performance during the winter.

Absolutely not. You are merely taking away the valve (and restrictions)out of it. Actually the psi output increases slightly without the pin, but it’s still regulated.

One thing I found is that filling this or I should say disconnecting this is a pain. The bleeder valve on my airhog tank gets stuck because of the pressure and I lose a lot of air unless I use a pair of pliers to quickly turn the bleeder. Don’t have this problem with the AF tank. I’m not filling it up on the gun due to this problem and wish it had a shut off but that would add more length.

There is another issue that anyone who gets this should be aware of. When it reaches under 2000psi you will get a tank dump so don’t run it under that pressure. what I found is that you get one shot with a extra blast of air and then the next shot will dump the tank due to the co2 adapter. It sucks having to learn that the hard way but you don’t have to 🙂

I do have a 10 shot string with JSB Preds that just touched into the 900 range with an average velocity of 903 fps. Was thinking that the co2 adapter could be modded for higher flow as all it has is that small hole next to the pin depressor? Maybe someone has already done this and has the steps needed for this mod?

The tank I’m thinking about getting is the Catalina paintball tank which has dimensions of 3.58W x 8.38L which is 44ci/730cc and the overall length with the regulator and co2 adapter would be about 16″ which would fit me. The 2″ tank that he sells are too damn skinny. This combination would give me a nice hunting setup with JSB preds and a minimum of 60 shots.

Numbers look good, your unlikely to get the same velocity in this tank that you get with a condor tank even without a regulator just because the air is flowing through the paintball tank’s valve, then the adapter and the condor valve instead of just the condor valve. All that extra travel reduces flow somewhat. Plus you have the regulator and like shrp says – they have a set volume of air to meter out which is what makes them regulated, and thats going to be less than a non regulated condor valve will let out.

Looks like the reg. is doing its job, nice string for consistency. It appears to me that the regulated volume of air (in front of the reg and inside the co2 adapter) is simply not enough to get higher velocities. What we would need is more regulated volume to get into the 900s; i.e. an adapter like the af co2 unit with more internal volume. That or a reg. with a faster recovery time (lets more regulated air flow through the valve faster)

I was debating trying one of those tanks myself. A new “high internal volume” CO2 adapter and the 22ci tank should give a really good shot count in the upper 9’s velocity range.

Hopefully Mark reads this one and can back up my thought process here or shed a good light of his own.

I’d be interested to see a string with jSB or CPH. Probably ideal for the air available.

Sorry that I left out the size of the tank. The tank I got was the 13ci tank which is the same length as the AF tank with the adapter. I wish I got the 22ci tank as I would be getting a whole lot more shots. The tank was filled to 2800psi and I ended at 2000psi after that 27 shot string.

Thinking about getting a larger tank and already wrote to Catalina about a couple tanks they have.

Glen, that’s a very good shot string in terms of velocity cosistency. Probably a better deal than the micro meter tank. How many shots did you get before POI changed? Does the tank changed the length of pull or comfort factor when you shoulder the rifle? Thanks.

Very nice report, but you left out what size the tank was.
