Buying a Talon SS – Need Advice
I’ve been lurking here for a couple of weeks, and I’ve finally decided to take the plunge and buy a Talon SS .22. I’m planning to buy one with the scuba adapter and scope included to save a little cash. This is my first air gun, and I’m planning to use it to take care of some groundhog issues, and also target shooting with family and friends.
Based on the advice given here, I’ve also decided to buy a Hill pump. (I’m planning to get one without the dry-pak. I don’t want to deal with buying refills.) Eventually, I’ll probably buy a scuba tank, but I figured a good pump would be nice to have in any event. Could anyone point me to the correct adapter I need to buy to get the AF tank and Hill pump working together?
From what I’ve read in the AirForce manual, I shouldn’t bother with cleaning pellets, and I shouldn’t use gun cleaners because they can damage the seals and/or o-rings. They also say that a cleaning rod can be used. Any advice on what I should do in regards to maintenance, and are there any products I should be ordering to help with the task?
I have neighbors relatively close, and I’m trying to avoid disturbing them, so I’ll be doing the spring/fender wash/spacers shroud mod I’ve read about here. I’m also considering adding a rubber washer to the hammer to try to lower the hammer slap sound, but I’m not sure what to use to attach the washer to the hammer. I’d like to buy a real shroud, and a hammer mod from somebody who knows what they are doing, but those will have to wait until the shock to my wallet from this initial investment wears off.
I’ve gotten a lot of ideas from these forums, and I’ve really enjoyed reading the backlog of posts. In that regard, are there any other recommended mods I should look into. I’m particularly interested in making my Talon quieter, but I’d probably enjoy researching anything that’s worthwhile.
For groundhogs, what .22 pellets would you guys recommend? Based on what I’ve read the Beeman Kodiak Extra Heavy seem to be a good bet, but I’d be interested to hear any other recommendations.
If anyone has any other advice to share with a newbie, please feel free.

I would recommend a scuba tank nice and easy to fill the tanks with instead of a hand pump but if you do chose the pump I haven’t heard anything bad a bought the hill pumps.

I hadn’t really thought about how long my post had gotten, until I was readying your response. Originally, I’d just intended to ask about the tank adapter, but once I got started other questions kept getting coming to mind. I probably should have broken it into separate posts, but it’s a bit late now.
Regarding the pellets, thanks for the advice on the CP pellets. I’d planned on ordering pellets since I wasn’t sure if I could find a store around Columbus, Ohio that carried the ones the Talon would prefer. I’m sure I’ve seen the CP pellets at a local store. I’ll just have to check to see if they have any in .22 caliber. Then I’ll order the Kodiaks, JSB’s, and predators online and see which ones shoot the best once I get my gun.
I’ll definitely check at out talontunes.com again when I get home from work tonight. I’m really tempted to go ahead and buy a tuned TSS, and start out ahead of where I’d be with a stock gun. My wallet keeps telling me no, but it usually loses the argument when I really want something. 🙂

Let me help you with a few queries you’ve put up, forgive the order in which I’ve replied.
> CP pellets are the only ones I’ve used for hunting up to 70 yards yet. They do a great job. You can see my posts in the Hunting section too, all done by the Crossman Premium 14.3 grains.
Besides them the talon loves the JSB’s and Beeman Kodiak Extra Heavy.
All above 3 pellets will take the ground hogs down if accuracy is in place.

You need to try all and choose the best one that suits you….
Predators are also liked by the talon…..but most preffered for kill within 30 yards….Have heard the damage is more…..No real time experiences…

They are many who do mods but many here in the forum would swear by his work.
At talontunes you can put your Talon to sleep and whack the hog who visits your place. I don’t think someone in the next room would know…exceptional to the sound of the pellet hitting the target or the hammer thud, rest is history……..
