Cam Actuated Valve

Has anyone looked into a cam actuated poppet valve? Not sure if one could be fitted to an AF gun but other guns could be. I was thinking about a cam with a very sharp back side so that the valve could snap closed quicker without having the pressure of the hammer and spring against it. This would eliminate hammer bounce, possibly have a mechanical advantage so a lighter spring and hammer could be used, The gradual opening of the valve may reduce peak DB level as pressure increases during the duration then the valve can close very quick with no opposing pressure against it. With a properly designed cam the duration could be controlled so as to be very similar to what we have now and the cam could be moved to control total lift or open distance. IDK the cam style may open and close faster that the standard hammer valve.

just so you know, cam activated valve knocking in airguns is ancient
look at an Austrian Girandoni lock as a great example
the external hammer is attached to an internal tumbler which cams on a transfer bar to knock the valve stem in the Butt flask.

Years ago I imported an exquisite approx. 28 gauge muzzle loading air shotgun from Canada. Had no makers name or proofs but suspect it was 19th century English or Scottish built…was an extremely high quality bit of kit.
anyways it resembled an over and under shotgun with a Damascus upper barrel mounted above a Damascus pressure tube that screwed into a case hardened frame with a center hammer that acted on an internal cam arrangement to knock the valve stem…very slick but never had the opportunity to test it out for performance as the tools and pump were missing from the case.

The reason behind using these kind of mechanics back then was that the guns used much lower pressure HPA than we do today and to make power they relied on a greater volume passing through the valve

I guess so. I sued Chrysler over a new diesel truck that lasted 6k miles. I took it to the dealer at 5k miles for its first oil change and look over. At 6k the injectors failed and they wouldnt fix it under warranty. They blame all their failures on contaminated fuel. At any rate my lawyer took it on contingency and 3 years later he lost the case and around 70k. Word to the wise ask for the owners manual and read your warranty before signing papers.

probably the same way they avoid lawsuits from their safeties, which are as good as a backwards trigger…

So how are they able to get a patent on it? How did AF get a patent on the sliding breach? I remember looking at a Beeman catalog and seeing a sliding breach on a side lever or underlever when I was in the 7th grade

LOL Money I guess I would be too. People here just dont know me. I am an inventor and creator at heart. I work for SpaceX in the propulsion division. I created owned and operated an aircraft engine manufacturing business for 18 years where my designs revolutionized the industry. All the manufacturers copied and changed their design to try and equal our power to weight ratio. I sold thousands of engines all over the world and to Nasa (Dryden Flight Research Center) and the US Navy. So when someone tells me I am full of shit because I have a new rifle design I take offense to it. I am not sure how long it will be before I put it on the market but you can rest assured it will be.

just know that new groundbreaking design proposals bring out the skeptic in most of us here, given past incidents, so tread with caution… 😉

we still rifle barrels after centuries as well, still worked last i checked…

Hello Dave, A cams design and the speed of the cam could mean that it would open quicker than the current valve and with the quicker closing the total duration could be less with less waisted air. Probably not the case but why not give it a try. Nothing can be considered perfect because there is always room for improvement even if it is the state of the art. Its just hard to believe that the standard hammer/poppet valve that has been around for 200 years is still the best.

A cam as you describe would waste air, the gradual opening of the valve would mean that the pellet would be out of the barrel before the valve has opened a 1/4 of the way.

If it were to be a cam, you want a very fast opening and a very fast closing of the valve, basically what a hammer valve does so well.

Don’t try and invent the wheel….
