Q:

Can An Adjustable Top Hat Provide Tank Dump Resistance?

I’m interested in running a 15″ .177 LW barrel on my TalonP (with home machined barrel bushings). I’m currently happy with the gun’s 25 caliber performance with my OEM barrel and the OEM top hat set at .100″ with a #10 o-ring, which provides .030″ of gap to the o-ring. From the forums here, I’ve learned that an o-ring helps with a .177 barrel and tank dumps. Would the smallest restrictor in Tony’s adjustable top hat further help to reduce the likelihood of a tank dump? I also have a 17-1/2″ 22 cal. LW barrel that I could fit-up.

Can someone also please tell me what the adjustable top hat gap would be? Given that the gap would no longer be adjustable, I’m interested in what I’d have to work-with when using an o-ring too.

Thanks much for the info!

Thanks, onebaddj! I’ll definitely look for your posts with the insert velocity data. Looks like the 22 will be my next barrel on this gun.

I cant remember the exact measurement for the tophat gap but i usually run a .030-.035 washer under it on my condor and talondor. On my condor with not restrictor in the tophat i get 95 fpe with 45 gr slugs and 3400 psi fill. All i do for ratting with the condor is pop in the small restrictor and switch to 22 cal hn hunter extremes. Thats the benefit of the qc top hat. On my talondor stubby in 25 cal i have the small restrictor all the time because i dont need tons of power to whack ground squirrels and gophers. But if i need to open her up it take 20 seconds to pop out the restrictor.

If you search my threads i have one that specifically deal with the velocity drop with each insert and no insert. Also have a thread here with velocities of the condor on 3000 psi with washers under the tophat from .015-.050.

Hopes this helps and good luck bro. Oh and i agree with black talon. Ditch the 177 unless you 90% target shooting and 10% pesting hunting. 22 is much better suited for these guns in my opinion.

Forgot. If it were me I would sell the .177 barrel and use the money for more pellets :2cents:

Yes I have more than one a Condor SS in .25 and a Talon SS in .22. I have my Talon set up for 14.3 grain pellets and get board shooting bee caps at 35 yards. The Condor has a Talon Tunes adjustable top hat and is set up for 31 grain pellets. That will take out a tree rat at 75 yards no problem.

Only because I have a new .177 LW barrel that I picked up cheap, but I also got my longer .22 LW barrel cheap too–haha! I agree that the valve is more suited to the .22 than a .177 and, with so many good .22 pellet choices (actually more than .25 choices) including some pretty heavy .22 pellets, I’m sure I’d find some .22s that shoot accurately too.

I have always wanted to try the very heavy Piledriver pellets in both .177 and .22, but I’ll admit that I’ve not seen many rave reviews for accuracy.

Here’s another thought: I’d like to get another AF gun. (Most owners have more than one, right? ;)). I designed a takedown stock for my 213 cc TalonP tank that provides the best cheek weld of any of my air rifles and my scope centerline is “only” 2.5″ above bore center, which is actually a touch less than typical AR-15 scope height. I love my stock and I love the small tank for hunting, which enables the low scope height without any angled adapters. For benched target shooting or shooting from a fixed position, I tether to my SCUBA tank. If I can tune my valves with only o-rings and the top hat, it would be a simple matter pack the 213 cc tank from my second gun with me hunting, given the ease of achieving cross compatibility (no need to remove a valve to tune for different pellets and calibers).

Anyway…long answer but that’s where my head is at. Thanks for your input, Blacktalon6!

.177 will be screaming with that valve. Why not just drop down to a .22.
