can anyone recommend some good reading for me?
I have joined the ranks of lathe owners, and while i use to be quite proficient with them I have come to the conclusion I have forgotten more than I remember 😥
so help a brother get back into the spin of things 😛

That 6 jaw is good for holding thin wall tubing but really is not necessary. To see the specs for the lathe and chucks take a look at LMS they list it all there.
That cam is defiantly a must have, I have already said to myself that it is lame a hell that thing has a nut instead of a nice user friendly cam 🙄
I took a look at those other tool rests and they do look and seem a bit better with out being that much more at all, and they even throw in a knurl rig on one of the holders so if you look at it that way they are about the same price 8)
I just got done grinding the cutters and to my amassment they are carbide 😯 I thought they were HHS but nope there is a carbide tip brazed in there and very poorly dressed, so I have them looking proper, now I just have to find some more stuff to play with at the scrap yard.
WoK what is the through size of that chuck, or better yet the tube behind the chuck?
I’m drooling over this one

Do yourself a huge favor and get one of these as well

I put a 5″ 3 jaw chuck on my minilathe and it is worth every penny. It makes the machine run very smooth and hold much larger stock.

That is an excellent set for that price. All of the tool posts and holders are copies of the toolposts made by a company called Aloris. A genuine Aloris set would run you considerably more. But the Chinese knock offs work just as well, or nearly so. Some people say the steel used in the Aloris is better and consistency and surface finish is better, but so what. Either will hold tolerance/repeatability measured in the millionths of an inch, so either is good enough. A word of caution, your picture shows a piston type post. This isn’t as good as the wedge type, there is a functional difference. I’d spend the extra money for the wedge type. They look identical except on the wedge, a small portion of the V is angled and moves up and down to hold the holder tight. On the piston type the piston moves out and tensions agianst the toolholder itself, so moves it slightly under tension. Not as accurate. But, in a pinch, it is still hella cheap. I think one single Aloris tool holder block (your picture shows 4 of them in this set) will exceed the price of your entire set, never mind the post itself, which is the most expensive piece. But this type of post will allow you freedom from the shims, which is absolute heaven. Especially with HSS bits, which must be ground on an angle, so every time you resharpen the bit, the height changes and you have to reshim.
aloha,

ya the cutters could and should be sharpened, they are junk to be honest with you and I need to just get some better ones as well as a new tool rest. the one it came with is very basic and I have to make some shims to adjust the tool hight. I am thinking about this kit for $150, but I don’t need the drill chuck for I have one. here is a link to it, if you could let me know if it’s worth it…

I did all of the cutting on that end cap with the “V” cutter and just moved the rest to different angles, I did do some of the reset with the right and left cutter but I found the “V” moved around was doing a better job of things.
I found a couple of places with some good info on them and I’m reading how to grind the cutters now, it’s only been 20 + years sense I’ve done one 😕
GTBJ, why is there a small lip on the edges of the flange? Check your bit sharpness. Also use your mike to measure and set tool height on your post.
For carbide set it dead center. For HSS set it a couple thousandths upward of center.
I see you are using your cutoff blade to cut the recess. Don’t. Get a HSS bit and just grind it to the shape you want, left cut or right hand cut. Make sure you have about 7 degrees of relief angle under the bit.

This is an old school type quickie read, gotta love the ink drawings 8) 8) 8) 8) 8) 8) 8)

I did some more farting around and made an end cap out of some crap I found at the scrap yard, It was badly beaten up and had a hole in it already that came out off center once I trued it so it won’t be usable just a learning tool 😉
were do you guys buy your stock at? I can not get any in town and was wondering if there is a good place online you guys use.
well here is my first attempt at an end cap 🙄

Hey, at least he had good taste in clothes. You should see what I wear when I’m working on the lathe.
By the way, I’m counting the revolutions of clothes on the workpiece between centers. Gives me an idea of how long it took before someone else ran over and turned the thing off. Now all I need to know is how fast his spindle speed was….
I’ll probably get chewed up tomorrow on my own lathe. The Japanese call this “BATCHI” and it translates roughly to ‘bad karma’, when you bad mouth someone the same will happen to you…

I guess wearing loose clothing is not a good idea, HATCHET !!!!!!!

that picture (and different angles) was put up as a warning at my college
quite nasty looking from the other side of the headstock
also, it can be used as a kind of ‘find waldo’ pic, except with eyeballs

😆 :9 😀 I like the quick brown cow my self 😉
it’s coming back to me, I’m still doing a bit more thinking than I like and my tapers aren’t perfectly perfect yet but I’m getting there. I’m still having problems doing a mock crown, I think I’m going to have to make a different cutter to do a good one.
I’m still going to do some type of basic turning reading, I need a refresher on which cutter, when and how to use them 😉
That guy needs to shave before showing up for work.

I hate my indexable tool holder’s from LMS. I have the A2Z quick change tool post and that’s pretty nice.
Definitely get a 5″ chuck, like WOK says they are worth it.
Read through this if you haven’t already
