Q:

Can I add a regulator to my co2 tank?

I’m betting its not rocket science to add a 2000 regulator to one of these tanks, and since JD has pissed me off and I cant find another source that sells them I may just make my own..and ideas? thanks!

BTW just incase you are wondering….. I have built a regulator in a little PCP carbine based on a Crosman 262. Works great up to 2800psi fill and regs at 1,000psi. Never failed yet in 10 years 🙂

take a look at this temp/pressure chart to get an idea how much CO2 performance will vary by temperature. You can see that at 40deg, co2 is roughly only 600psi, not enough for good performance. If you were happy with CO2 performance on say an 85deg spring day, you would want a regulated JDS AIR tank w/ 1100psi regulator for colder weather shooting.

CO2 and cold weather just don’t mix very well unless the ranges are really short.

Simply adding a reg to the co2 tank would not be all that suitable as your fill pressure with air will be only 1800psi max with air. It was 33 here today.. I have found out after my purchase that co2 aint from shit under 50 degrees.. shpshotr suggested I get a jds regulated tank so my shots would be the speed they need to be.. thanks!

I don’t understand why you would want to do this. my co2 is very consistant untill the bottle gets about 2/3rds. empty, maybe I’m missing something is it for the steel tank and a kick-ass regulator or something.

Not a good idea to use a CO2 ank. they normally operate at 1000-1200psi (on a hot day) and are only test to 1800PSI. Need a high pressure air cylinder to reg down to 2000psi.

Don’t know offhand anyone selling 2K regs besides JD..and i’m not real sure if running that little reg to 2K is a good idea or not (so far, the higher the pressure that reg. is set for, the less well it works). Can tell you this, there are many regs….and there is a beat-to-snot (it was self defence…I swear it tried to kill me) “Myth” in my junk box.

Short answer is this: don’t.

While it’s not rocket science, there is some engineering and safety type issues hanging about. For instance, a 2000 psi regulator on a 1800 psi rated tank.

While it is possilbe to use 3000 psi tanks (as Crosman does) to support the regulator, the actual usable part of the charge is only 1/3. When the pressure drops to 2000 you start getting lower mv (or partial fills depending). Going to a 4500 psi tank (provided you can get it filled) lets you get over half the air you pay for out.

There are real safety issues with high pressure regulators, and bitty ones would no doubt have them. As pressure goes up, parts get pushed harder (stiffer springs, higher pressure differentials, etc) and output errors become more dangerous (a few precent of 2000 is dozens of psi)

So, sure you can do it with the proper hardware, Crosman is doing it as a standard accessory to the Discovery. You just gotta follow the rules. Like 1800 psi in CO2 tanks.
