Q:

Carbon Fiber

Received this today from RiffRaff (BIG Kudos to Militia Man !).

Going to turn into a bad ass looking shroud for my RWS 54 when I get a few other projects finished up.

Thanks Riff !

Looks good. You could turn down the OD around the holes to increase volume 😉

Only the Z is ballscrew. The backlash on the X and Y is lower than I thought – but its compensated for in software anyway.

End cap –

Obviously needs the rough edges cleaning up, but pretty much finished. Its going to be epoxied into the CF, which is why there is a large space at the front – I didnt want to put epoxy in the area’s that have the through holes and end up with drips causing problems.

Does your mill have ball screws or a backlash compensator? If not then you will be better off conventional milling…. I can trick mine into not climb milling but it always seems easier on the cutter and does leave a better finish when it climbs.. 😉

I had the Axis setup backwards so it was climb milling accidentally the first few weeks.

I thought conventional milling is better because its less stress on the machine…. I guess I could do a final pass climb milling to give it a nicer finish – But its going to be hidden within a CF tube and this is all new to me – Baby steps.

thats pretty sweet Yellow..have you ever thought of programming it so it will climb mill?

I had too many frozen beverages yesterday while playing with the G code to want to mess with Mill so I waited until tonight.

Ready to start –

First hole…

Second hole..

And some video’s

Hey Rob,

What diameter are you needing? I can keep my eyes open for one.

Ebay…… I never think to check there. Thank you, sir for the lead….

edit………….

sorry for the thread jack. Was not the intent.

You can find shorter lengths of eBay too, just make sure your getting the Woven type that looks pretty otherwise you might end up with what amounts to an ugly fat arrow shaft.

riffraff gave it to me. I’m not sure he can help out anymore though – He’d have to answer that.

Before riff came to my rescue I was going to buy it from here –

Thanks on the link… looked briefly through the ‘Remnants’ and that looks like what I am after. I’ll only be needing a shroud of around 13 inches… and function FOLLOWS form as I am mainly interested in looks and not so much with function for this particular project.

AWESOME….

I have a Crosman project I’m working on that I’ll need a shroud for. I know CF is $$ so I’ll be going for plastic… 😆

Very nice work on that.

Where does one find a CF tube like the one you have?

Did not realise it had taken me this long to even get started.. But here is phase one of my RWS 54 CF Shroud fresh off the lathe.

End cap extends 3.5 inches into the tube and I’m taking a break just to write the G-Code to mill a few circular pocket’s into it to make it into a core like Blodnob’s et al.

The total rig is 40.5″ with a 24″ shroud and 18″ barrel.

It’s just a MA2250.

Photo, how long is that thing? Looks like the gun would be 4 feet long. 😛

YN, when you’re done with that let me know. My condor would really appreciate a shroud that wouldn’t scratch. 🙂
