Q:

casting ammo

I wonder who casts .45 ammo for the texan? How much is it to buy ammo compared to casting your own? I know it’s difficult to get gun powder now and done on purpose. I love how easy airforce airguns are to fix without many o – rings etc. I own an fx verminator mk2 extreme for a survival airgun and am curious what other types are best for any type of zombie apocalypse scenario 🙂

I own a 9mm evanix rainstorm and love it. Recently I bought 500 rounds of 127 grain 9mm bullets for $43 Canadian. They seem to shoot very well but use up alot of air. Does anyone know if this csn damage the valve because it’s usually shooting 77grain JSB pellets. It’s about $18 for 100 rounds of 77grain ammo.

I can buy 500 rounds of 250 grain bullets for $45. I am curious how it would work in the texan. Does anyone own one yet?

That’s some good prices, sir j…Where can I get this ammo?

What kind of ammo do you want? I cast alot of 294 grain .457 bullets. Joeeigo@gmail.com is my email.

I threw out all my old lead and bought new 100% pure lead. The groups on my texan tightened way up. Sized to 456. 255 grain HP mold that was a RCBS 325 grain mold cut down and modified for HP.

You can buy cast bullets from the major manufacturers. See if you can get them in bulk of 500 per box. I used to when I didn’t have time to cast, on the other side of the world as a soldier, for .45 LC when I was shooting Cowboy Action Shooting. I handloaded all my rounds. Made them a bit slow so recoil was less and I could shoot faster!

Not sure what the groove size is for the Texan but you can buy a sizer, if you want to be absolutely sure the bullets are right on for the barrel. Lots of choices available for .457. Lots of good molds too. I am sure Bob Sterne’s mold would be perfect, every math equation he does is spot on.

If I ever get a Texan I will be casting, again, for shooting.

I wonder if 480grain .457 ammo can work well in the texan? I got into casting .45 ammo using Lyman molds. Anyone try any heavy rounds and how they perform?

I haven’t cast anything for airgun use, as of yet, but it should be pretty easy to cast a bullet for the Texan. I’ve cast plenty of .45 bullets for .45 ACP. At that size, the casting is easy.

Ignoring your time, it’s dramatically cheaper. Even buying lead at $1/lb it’s quite a savings ($65 vs $200). Start looking for lead and some inexpensive or free sources start to pop up. If you can get a line on used tire weights (watch it – they’re not all lead anymore!), combine sound deadening material, lead flashing, etc, that can go to $0 vs. $200. A good setup will cost you $200-$300 to get started, a big chunk of which will be the mold(s).
