Q:

Changing caliber

I have a Talon in .177, my questions are the following

If I install a .22 barrel, do I have to change anything else?

If I install a .25 barrel, do I have to change anything else?

I realize velocity will be lower.
Thanks

Talon/Talon SS

Thanks for all the information…just acquired a Talon SS in .177 and am considering a caliber change.

get a high flow tank for .22/.25. it has softer spring so valve would open longer. then change the tophat. you can use one like tony’s with changeable inserts, or you can machine one to max the flow and restrict the travel with rubber bushing or orings with different thickness or density. then you can fine tune it with powerwheel as long your hammer weight does not opening the valve all the way. fine tune it by shooting strings until you get the flattest string. without the right valve, it will be almost pointless to up the cal unless you wanna slow it down.

Hi,

I just assumed that a .25 would benefit from a hi-flo valve. I would not upgrade to .25 just to get in the same fpe range of the .22.
Get the .25 and the hi-flow or direct-flo tank and you can fully enjoy the .25 capability.

You are correct the .25 will be at its best if you are after its full potential for power with the high flow tank. If you go that rout then yes you need to add weigh to the hammer. It sounded like the op was asking about .25 with the standard flow tank so I provided the needed info to answer HIS question.

If you get the .25 you will need the additional hammer weight or replace the hammer with a heavier one

You dont have to add weight with the .25 if you are using the the standard flow tank that comes on the talon models. The high flow tank requires an added weight because the valve has a stiffer spring setup. You can use a heavier weight hammer or add the AF weight to the hammer with the standard flow to try to increase the velocity but its not necessary. If you are using a 12″ barrel and add a weight you will only waste air and reduce your shot count.

When I first bought my .22 Talon SS I got an up graded Talon 65 gram hammer from Tony and it worked very nice to help reduce trigger slap noise .
After a year I up graded my barrel to a Talon Tunes .25 cal. barrel and still using the up graded hammer the hammer slap noise did not increase .
So the 65 gram Talon Tune hammer with slap modification should work for both .22 and .25 calibers , at least it has worked for me in both of these
calibers without increasing hammer slap noise . Tony’s mods for the Air Force guns work very well .

You can change to any caliber with a talon using the one tank cause the talon does not have different valves for the .177. The high flow valve is the only one that has a different setup for .177.

Hi,

it all depends on the valve on the tank.
I believe the tank that comes with the .177 might have a slightly more restrictive valve. You should check with AF if you cannot tell the difference.

It will work, but it won’t give you the velocity you might be looking for.

For the .25 I would definitely change or get a new tank with a hi-flo or direct-flo valve.

Cheers
Chris
