Q:

Choices, Choices! newby questions.

Hi, My first post I’ve shot cartridge arms, muzzleloaders and bows and arrows for 40 years, had a Benji .22 before I was big enough to be able to pump it easily. After 20 years I replaced it with a Sheridan .20, which I still have, and almost every day it helps me end the life of a garden-robbing rock squirrel. These squirrels look like a good size gray tree squirrel, but live in the boulders that line the river below my home. I became interested in the AF Condor and TSS and have been reading the forum nonstop for the last week. So much good info to absorb! A few days ago I ordered a Condor w/ 24″ .20 cal barrel, a 12″ .20 cal barrel w/ SS end cap, CO2 adapter w/ 12oz. tank , and a Catalina 100 sq.ft Scuba tank and AF clamp. I ordered from Randy at rlairgunsupply.com. I have heard the carbon tanks are the way to go but could not see shelling out $600 bucks, so went with the scuba. I’ve since seen some cf tanks that are more like $350. I’m anxiously awaiting my Condor and acessories, those squirrels that have been mocking me at 50+ yards will be in for a surprise soon. I suspect I’ll be getting more use out of the 12″ barrel on CO2 in the backyard, and thought I’d have to get a .25 barrel soon for a “thumper”. Maybe I stubbornly wanted a .20 cause I already have the Sheridan and have a shitload of pellets for it, But now I’m wondering maybe I should have ordered my lw barrels in .22? Anybody out there shoot a condor or talon ss in .20 ? I know they’re all good , but I’d like to keep things simple and not end up with a closet full of barrels and 3 or 4 different size pellets to feed them. I could probably send the 24″ .20 barrel back and get an 18″ or 24″ in .22 or .25 instead. Any opinions? Thanks.

Leadslinger get some JSB in 20 cal I have a Beeman RX2 and have talked to others that have different 20cal guns and JSB will impress you 😉

LS57, you want to leave it there and get it filled and then have them “Top it off” for you before you leave. A hot fill is not a fill.
Another option (and I believe this would work but have never tried it) would be if you have a freezer in your garage (in other words, a freezer only) and put your tank in there for 24 hours and then went straight to the scuba shop and got a fill. Has anyone tried that? Another option, albeit expensive, is to buy a compressor and “Roll your own”

I took the tank to the dive shop yesterday and had it filled. It was warm to touch, i asked the guy how much he had gotten in it, he said around 3400, but after it cooled it would only be 3100. So much for the safety factor! I thought they would take longer to fill it so it didn’t get hot. Someone else told me some places have chiller tanks to cool the tank as it’s filling. Got the Condor sighted in, this one will stay set up w/ 12″ barrel and baffles and run off Co2 for backyard plinking and quiet pest control. I put a Trijicon acog on it for now. Only 4x but super clear(should be for $1500), It has a small red dot sitting on top, pefect for a late evening shot on the skunk thats been coming around at night. First kill with it a couple hours ago, a big ‘ol battle-scarred squirrel in the neighbor’s garden.

leadslinger57,
I don’t think the Paint Ball place will fill your 3300 PSI rated tank to more than 3000. I believe there is a 10% safety factor considered.

But I’m just the 210 lb. gorilla in the room that doesn’t have a scuba or Carbon Fiber tank yet.

supposed to be a 3300 psi. One of the diving shops in town said they could only fill to 3000, so I checked with the other one. they are also a paintball shop, said they can fill to 4500 (If I had a tank that would hold that much), so 3300 won’t be a problem. $5.00 to fill the scuba, $2.00 to fill the Co2, so thats good news. Ordered another condor in .25 yesterday.

Only thing I can see that may be a problem is the 100 cu.ft. scuba tank..I believe it’s only a 3000psi tank…which means that from the very first fill you won’t be able to fill gun to 3000psi…If you fill to 2800 and re-fill @ 2000psi,(back uo to 2800psi) you’ll only get 7 refills. This could be a PITA, if you end up shooting a LOT………

Same spring Lurker.

Just a question here. We know that the Condor Hi Flo tank comes in 2 flavors. One for the .22 and one with a different (heavier) valve spring for the .177. A quick call to AF would settle it but does anyone here know for sure which valve spring is supplied with a new .20 Condor?

Leadslinger57, it could make a difference and you will probably want to know before ordering the .22 barrel.

Welcome to the board and I looking forward to your input to a very interesting subject.

Thanks, y’all for the caliber advice. The pellet selection in .20 was bigger than I thought, but there don’t seem to be too many heavier pellets, other than the eau Jin’s. I have 7 or 8 tins of the Ben-Sheridan 14.3 gr. Diablos and I thought they were average weight, but the Kodiak “heavies” are lighter, only the silver arrow is heavier at 15 gr. I can’t remember what the old Sheridan cylindrical pellet wieghs. Good to know that these diablos are loose in the AF guns. I’ll save them for the Sheridan. Think I’ll go with .22 for my next barrel. WalkonKing, don’t know about the Red Iguana, must be up in the Salt Lake area, I’m much closer to Vegas, only 6 miles from the top of Arizona.

the 20 is cool , i have a Sheridan, but the 22 is the way to go , selection, and cost , nice cheaper pellet choices too .

I have most all the 22 pellets now, and i shoot the crossman h.p. the most ,and its about the least expensive.

nothing wrong with 20, find a pellet the gun likes and enjoy.

you can find a second hand 22 barrel if you want and have it on hand too, just a barrel swap and your shootin 22,

good luck and welcome to the madness

If you are shooting the .20, and using Benji pellets, you will find they are alittle loose, and not very accurate, I use the light jsb’s or the ein jins premiers in the box shoot very well also, I love my .20 it is very accurate and enjoy co2 too, the thing is not much pellet selection and the .22 is hard to beat, I have all the barrels so I can swap if I get the urge.

.20 is good caliber.

I like .22 and the pellet selection is better.

If you want to pick up a 12″ barrel there a many out there and do not cost to much if you want to try it out.

Since you are in Utah have you ever eaten at the Red Iguana? I love that place
