Looking for a chronograph, and wondering what you all use and why ? Is there a big difference? Thank You Jeff

Rumor I heard is $560… The website says something like “for about $500”.
I’m not at all into being a dealer, although if I like it, it will probably result in another 6-7 sales at the local range…

GeneT is right about the Chrony. It is not very good in low light or cloudy days. And it misses here’n’there.
I do have the Chrony Alpha Master, though, with the remote display and I have to say it is a feature you would love in any chronograph brand ifyou can find it.
First of all it keeps the display off the trajectory of the pellet and secondly you can keep it closer for reading and resetting.
So far I cannot complain to much as it was very affordable.
Would I like a better one, sure. But at the moment it works and I can use the money for something else.
A note would be about how much you are going to use it. If you have a gunsmithing shop or do tuning for others it is probably better to get a higher quality/performing one.
If like me you just use it every once in a while to retune your rifle, then it is probably worht the money.

I think I’ve used some flavor of most of what are available today. Here’s my take:
Shooting Chrony: – cheapest, most compact, and convenient. Also fussiest about lighting conditions and more prone to generate errors than other chronographs.
CED / Pact: mid-range decent chronographs. In spite of being more expensive than the Chrony, some of the parts are more cheaply made (especially on the CED). That said, both work in a broader set of light conditions than the Chrony, and the CED has (for extra $$ of course) some IR screens that are very trouble free. I’ve had three Pact chronos, still have one, and they are all about 10fps optimistic (high) when clocking something around 1000fps.
Oehler: The gold standard. Oehler makes the highest quality chronograph, Their sky screens seem to work better than any of the other passive screens (not so perfect as lighted screens) and their use of 3 screens, rather than two virtually eliminates problems with gas registering on the first screen (this is a problem with chrono’ing powderburners too close to the skyscreens). In accuracy testing (pseudo calibration) the Oehler was more accurate than any of the others – this is a test I performed with a non-statistically signifcant sample of two Chrony”s, two Pact, and one Oehler. My one gripe with Oehler is the form factor of their screens sucks – they’re meant to mount to a piece of conduit, rather than something flat. It’s a workable system, and it allows you to get some serious screen separation if you want it (it’s just 1/2 EMT), but it makes the screens and mounts awkward and unwieldy. For that reason alone, if I just want to check something quick I usually reach for my Pact.
Magneto Speed: The newest, and most unique entry. The MS uses electromagnetic fields, rather than light, to clock a projectile. BUT, it requires mounting to the gun, in line with the bore axis. Something that is readily done to bolt-action rifles, but the thing is useless on semi-auto pistols where there’s no barrel available to attach it to. It would probably require some sort of adapter to mount to anything with a silencer, and might be difficult to mount to a lot of Bullpups without some adapter as well. I have no relative accuracy data on it, but am a little concerned by the very short distance (3-4″) between sensors. A neat idea, but not yet practical enough for general use, imo.
