CO2 barrel length experiments.

Test rifle: Talon SS (co2)

An externally rusty spare 24” Crosman 2260 barrel was fitted with black delrin bushings and fitted to the Talon frame. After cutting the breech to remove the transfer port and recrowning, the barrel was a fraction over 23” long.

The barrel was cut and recrowned for each length; the first cut was 3” to 20” even. From 20” on, cuts were made in 2” increments until 12” was reached.

ALL the other parts (spring, hammer, valve, etc.) were the same for each length tested. This rifle had already been fitted with a lightened hammer, and that hammer was retained though out the tests. Crosman premiers (14.3gr.) used for all tests. Vel. readings are from 5 shot averages (and rounded to whole numbers). No end cap was used. Test temp. was stable at 71 degrees for all tests and the rifle was allowed 2 min. between each shot to stabilize temperatures.

(Test was carried out from inside my workshop, which can be heated and checked with a thermometer to maintain stable temperatures. This limited the lighting, and required the chronograph to be placed 7 yards down range, so vel. listed need to be adjusted to reflect muzzle vel. A good ball park adjustment would be +20 fps for each figure.)

Just goes to show the unpredictability of co2. Some steps showed as much as 8.5 fps change per inch while other steps only showed 3.3 fps change per inch. Overall, it’s close to 6 fps per inch.

(1) If considering a drastic change in barrel length ( + 6” of change), think 6 fps per inch would be close.

(2) If you are contemplating a small change in length (2”), don’t be too surprised to find the amount of increase to be unpredictable.

(3) Unlike other published tests, did not find that there was a reduction in velocity when barrels longer barrels were tried. The Talon’s valve undoubtedly moves more co2 than the valve on the test guns used in those reports.

Some notes:
Once the barrel length became shorter than the frame, the noise became quite loud. A 12” barrel with out an end cap seems to use the frame as a noise enhancer.

Considering the use I’ll put this co2 powered rifle to, settled on a 16” barrel. Used a 2nd Crosman 24” barrel (this one not so ugly on the outside) to make the 16” barrel. WHAT shot well certainly changed,b ut 25 yard groups with favored pellets are within 1/16” of the 12” AirForce barrel. Luck of the draw, can’t expect every $14 Crosman barrel to shoot well. This 16” barrel needs larger diameter pellets with deeper hollow skits to shoot well.

With the power setting at #5, averaged 602fps at 7yards (call that 620fps muzzle vel.) and works fine out to the 25-30yards my back yard allows. A new, two baffle, 2 3/4”” longer than the frame, end cap seems to quiet this 12 foot pound rifle quite nicely.

Ah, I wasn’t thinking about using Gaylord’s test result to invalidate yours. Instead, it was more of a FYI. I came across those two articles when I was searching for info regarding barrel length vs. muzzle velocity because I had a speed issue with my CR2240 and someone from the Crosman site told me to go for a 10″ barrel. Sorry, my bad.

I’ve read those blogs…are the reason I undertook the testing. Evidently the Condor valve used on the co2 adaptors moves more gas than the valve on his test rifle. Wasn’t a whole lot of gain up to 23″, but a gain…his rifle showed a loss at longer lengths. Can only assume that the straight line path and big-bore valve stem of that Condor valve greatly improve co2 flow.

Might see a drop with longer barrels, but I’ve no sourse (at least cheap enough to be hacking 2″ sections off for experiments) for 28″ barrels.

It’s not that i doubt the valitdity of his tests, just that they don’t seem to apply to every co2 system out there.

have two 16″ barrels on hand…the one in the rifle now is a cut down Crosman and I have another made from a beat-to-snot QB barrel. Once the weather warms up (uspose to be in the 70’s by Wed.), will do a side-by-side. Esxpect there will be some differnces with indiviual pellets, but over all the vel. should be close.

Turns out I use CO2 thru my Talon SS almost exclusively. I keep it indoors so the CO2 is good to point out the back door and blast squirrels at 15 yards.

That’s why I tried the lighter hammer. Had more than enough adjustment at the top end to max. out what co2 could give me, so tried a lighter hammer to expand the bottom end.

As issued, the 12″ barrel would max. out at about #4. Would go a little faster at higher settings, but really used a whole lot more co2 for such a tiny gain. With the lighter hammer, will max. out at about #6.

May make an even lighter hammer and see if I can get it to reach max. speed by #8 or #10….might like the fast hammer speed for a crisper/snapper feel to firing.

Hard to quantify, but believe the lighter hammer shortens the time the valve is open….gives a qucker pulse of gas, without that “extra” co2…seems quieter even when giving the same speed as a heavy hammer moving slower.

really good info. Thanks for taking the time to document and post your experiment. Does look like pw setting above 5 really doesn’t make a lot of difference until barrel length exceeds 16″ or so.

Past #6, there is so little gain, it’s not worth setting it higher. Will get about the same vel at #6 as I will at any higher setting. Valve is squirting out more co2 and not getting any more speed; just cooling the rifle faster on each shot.

So dialed down to #1, and still getting 550fps….get a little increase with each step up to #6. Past #6, the co2 seems to be going towards making noise and cooling the rifle down. #5 just seems a good place to stop, it’s fast enough for my uses and seemed (more testing to come) to have very low variations.

Will be more useful in warm weather, but even into the 90’s there was a point with the stock 12″ barrel where more gas just didn’t equal more speed.

Wow this is some pretty impressive testing here.thanks for the info! It answers several questions I have had..but..why have the power setting on 5 and not 10?
