Cocking lever prototype

After I got my Selph/Blodnob valve, and installed the super heavy spring, the Condor has been very hard to cock using the thumb.

So the wheels started spinning, and heres what I came up with.

This was originally gonna be a lever like whats used on the S410s, but that was too complicated for my brain. I found some carbon bits today from a peice we are making for Lockheed Martin, and after a few minutes with a pen and paper I came up with a design.

Basically, this is a .250″ thick chunk of carbon which is molded in the shape you see here, only 72″ long.

The handle is nothing more than .5″ aluminum rod, hollowed out and tapped to 10/24 on one end.

The only real mod necessary to the gun was drilling a 2nd hole in the breech. This was a real bugger to keep lined up, when drilling this hole.
I made the handle parts at work, and drilled the breech here at home. Next time Ill take the breech with me and use the mill. Duh. 😳

This isnt as heavy as it looks, and its really easy to cock the rifle with that super heavy spring in there. Just lift to align with the slot, and push forward. Easy as pie. After loading a pellet, just pull back and drop into the locked position.

Im going to reshape it in a few spots, and I think I can get away with a shorter handle. I was mostly just trying to see if this would work.

Will do some chrony work this weekend to see if it affected consistency.

BTW, I can get a lot of this carbon ATM. Gonna snag some lengths tomorrow.

If you only got 770fps then you need a. more spacer or b. heavier hammer, c. both of the above.
The bushings are in the same place so its just a case of mixing spacers and hammer weight to get the perfect combo of cocking rsistance and decent fps.
It CAN be done! Took me a couple days of swapping out hammers and spacers but it was worth it as I now have a gun thats shoots hard AND is easy to cock…

If I took the powerwheel out, the spring wouldnt be long enough to keep pressure on the breech when its closed and uncocked.

Funny thing, I tried exactly what you described already, I just used a 2nd barrel bushing for a spacer. FPS with a Kodiak was 770.

I wonder if your non-FAC guns are designed different without the PW? Are the barrel bushings in the same place?

Using my thumb on the carbon part and pushing on the handle at the same time cocks the gun very easy. I have bad joints in my hands and fingers, probably attribute that to 14 years of throwing 75# aluminum spacers around.

Cocking the gun with a standard spring was uncomfortable, with this spring it was nearly unbearable. The side-cock knob on YN’s frame is so much easier its a wonder why they arent made that way to begin with.

My idea of zero preload is the main spring sitting against the bushing.
I then work from there….
If you got a powerwheel, that must be putting a shedload of preload on the spring.
From bushing to spring I have about 10mm of spacer and that gives the perfect amount of preload.
Whats the length of that power wheel??
Take the fucker out and pop in a 0.4″ spacer and see how that works out.

If the spring is the same type as we use over here, then I wonder why the excessive cocking effort??!!
If that power wheel shoves everything forward a little compared to our none powerwheel guns, I reckon thats where the problem is. Too much pre-tension. Blods springs are fine without the PW, you just play with the spacers….

The spring that I am including with the setup was recommended by Sean AKA blodnob, I am working with a US company for lighter springs so I will see what they come up with, I am going to do some testing with a couple of different hammer weights I think I will start with the factory spring and a 120gram hammer and see how that works.

I like the idea and your prototype looks good, but I’m curious as to how bad you are side loading the barrel like that. I’m wondering if you can see the barrel flexing when your pushing the breech forward? Especially the guys with the .25’s as the barrel walls are only around .030″ thick.

Don’t get me wrong, if it’s that hard to compress the spring I don’t know of a better work around either but that much tension seems excessive. I’m surprised the sear will even hold it back.

Yes, I was wondering if it affects the trigger pull as well. That cocking handle design is awesome. I would love to see a curved handle with a ball on the end…similar to most bolt actions. Or as you said, at least a little shorter. I suppose the design styles would be limitless depending on ones tastes. Good job 8)

What kinda spring is Brad supplying?? It sounds way to stiff if you need that amount of cocking effort??!!
I thought the springs Blod gave me were stiff, but it still only requires a finger over the scope rail and one thumb to cock… Its alot stiffer than a stock spring but not massively so…

Are you guys sure the preload from that crappy powerwheel is not over compressing the spring?

Has the trigger pull gone up alot??
