Coltri project

Started to build a compressor for myself, found a used coltri mch6 head unit with busted fourth stage. Took it apart and replaced conrod bearings and coated crank with ceramic coating to reduce friction and wear.
Fourth stage piston coated also.
Couple of pics of the project so far.

You say that your air dryer and filter are anodized, did you do it or it was allready anodized? Because mine is not.

Thanks Ray, really means a lot coming from you.
Yeah really a bit crazy to build something from parts, but you have the advantage of big country and big market for used appliances.
Not many used compressors around in Finland or in Europe for that matter. And those available used are rediculously priced.

I have only A4 molecular sieve in the filter for water vapor removal, don’t plan on breathing the air ever.
Topped off my 10L tank couple of times already, shooting a 780fpe gun eats a lot of air. And now that air is readily available I’m shooting a lot :smilen:
Did a rough calculation on cost, frame was free, just had to fabricate it at work. And I can use materials as I like, for I usually service our machining centers.
Carbon fiber was leftover from racing days, so no cost there anymore.
Pump, bearings, seals around 300€, dryers 193$ plus tax is around 205€ fanbelt 7,50€ Oil 22€
And some bolts and little things for around 20€
So around 560€ or ~620$ If I calculated correctly.
Would I do it again, yes for myself but for someone else no.

OK … I’m impressed!

I have to admit that in over 35 years of selling compressors, I have never run into anyone that has gone to such great lengths to bring a pile of parts back to life! :biggrinn: Almost every one of my people would rather buy a used machine for one or two thousand or a new one for $2900.

I do have to give you a little heads up on the filter system, though. I have gotten several people that have complained to me about their systems swearing that they were Coltri. But, as you already know, they aren’t. You have already found that the machining quality lacks a bit. And, if you ever decide to run it for breathing air, don’t. The filter size is way too small for grade E air.

Keep up the good work and keep us up on your progress.

Thanks, still need to sodablast the fan, to get the old paint off of it. It’s an old ford radiator fan that I made a hub for and clipped to fit.

Marko

Awesome, Marko! She looks great.

Fan cowling done quick and dirty, using an old bucket as a mold. Resin was a bit too old and didn’t run so good, it’s not as pretty as I would have liked. Three layers of carbon fiber mat.

Marko

Everything tested and now assembled, first fill to 300bar done :smilen:
Just needs a fan cover and maybe a belt cover.

Marko

Yes filters are from Shanghai, davyenergy is the seller.
Anodized finish on the filters.
Ceramic coating is cermalube from tech line coatings.

Marko

Practical ability is very strong
Ceramic coating is very interested in
I want to know about it.
Look at the picture the compressor works a lot of time.
Problems arise in the 4 stage, the exhaust spring bar
Are the two filters in the picture (from Shanghai)
Does the appearance have to do
Anode oxidation treatment

Wow. That is pretty neat capability!!!!

Work in a place that makes gas central unit parts for Aga has its advantages…
Mostly we deal with hydrogen storage equipment and oxygen lines.
So I have pump and gauges to measure stretch and rebound of the cylinders.
Usually I hydro my gun airtubes at home, chuck the tube to lathe on one end and measure stretch with dial indicator on other end.
And take measurements without test pressure on the tube at different marked locations.
Pressure up and repeat.
I can also do volume expansion test if needed.
Marko

Who do you have hydro the stuff? Would a place that hydro tests tanks do such work?

Yes, the o-ring was damaged on mine also. Not a big problem. Left one is the filter with molecular sieve, the one on the right is the water separator before the filter. It doesn’t contain any filtering media.

Marko

Hi MJP, your filter on the left is the same that I get with my davy compressor. If you open it , you should look at the o ring location if you dont have a sharp edge. Mine was sharp and the o ring was damaged so I polish the sharp edge with sand paper.

By the way , can you take more pictures of your airfilter on the rigth? What they use as cartridge filter material?

For being cheap but having lots of tools this might be the best solution for me,

Bought Davy filter tower and dryer from Shanghai. Comes with repackable filter and safety valve. Fittings and bleed valves and gauge included.
For me this hits the bill on cheap compressor, 193$ shipped on dhl express. I’m going to hydro test the towers for my own peace of mind and fitting quality bolts on the safety valve, just a precaution that doesn’t really cost anything.
