Q:

Condor .25

I got my Condor back from Tony last week, lots of playing ahead!
My first dealing with Tony and I must say I was extremely pleased with his work! The shroud is amazing, hard to believe how hard this rifle hits with such a quiet report.
I’ve had time to try a few pellets so far, getting 105+ fpe with Jerry’s 7 ring 71.5 grain slugs with PW @ 10. Seems to like Eun Jins 42.5 at 30 yards. Like I said, lot of playing ahead. Got my CF tanks full and waiting. I may have to rearrange the Chrony as checking MV is a little hairy. The back stop is directly behind it to allow for shooting up to thirty yards. Works fine with less powerful guns, but this beast is a little much with POI that close! 2×4’s don’t stand a chance and 3/4″ oaks boards split, the splinters are like shrapnel.
I’ll post some strings down the road, maybe figure out how to post pics.

Harry you’re right, the duct seal is great, I have 3 boxes various size.
Must be about 25-30 lbs of that nasty stuff and a lot of lead inbedded in them! The setup I was using at first put the chrony directly in front of a trap with about 1 1/2 inches of duct seal. I figured the added wood would prevent penatration, which it did, resulting in a mess.
Last weekend I brought another chronogragh (Pro Chrono) to the range so I could get measurements at the muzzle and 30 yards downrange for each shot, worked like a charm! Those surefire slugs lose only about 40-45 fps in 30yds, as opposed to 100+ with a lot of pellets.
Got 107+ fpe from one of Jerry’s 71.5 grain slugs, but they aren’t very accurate. Had 2 flyers, 1 was 5 inches off and the other was off 6 inches. The 6 ring 61.9 gr shoot much better, 101 fpe best so far.
Looks like EJ’s and Kodiaks are by far the most accurate. 87+ fpe with pointed Eun Jins and 74+ with the Kodiaks.
This rifle is kick ass in terms of power, we’ll have to do more shooting to see if it can be as accurate as my other airguns.

Those #’s look a lot like mine Jim. You probaly did not have a 2900psi fill before when getting 890fps, maybe more like 2700psi..(?) cause mine gets 950fps on a 2900psi fill. Your 3K psi #’s look great.

You need to get a “silent trap”. It’s very easy. I made 2 of them. You go to Home Depot and get an 8×10″ outdoor electrical junction box. Then buy (probably in the same isle) 2 boxes of duct seal. That should be 10 1lb bricks per box, or 20lbs. Then fill that junction box up. You can shoot all day long indoors with that setup, but make sure the duct seal is at least double or tripple thick where you shoot the most. I actually only use the Condor on that (usually 40-60fpe) and the Springers. You can scotch tape an 8.5×11″ target paper on it too and shoot from the other end of your house if you have to. I only do it with low power guns though.

For the .25 Condors that have more power, use the rest of the bricks to make a duct seal ball like many of us have. Mine is about 6-7″ in diameter. Or you can just fill up the junction box more (it’s almost 5″ deep so it can take a lot of duct seal). Make sure you have at least 3 layers of (brick) thickness packed good all throughout the box. They ‘re great when you just put the gun through the Chrony. That’s all I use them for and I chony them almost every time I re-fill them (usually 2 shots through the Chrony to make sure the power/velocity is where it’s supposed to be). I still put a 2×8″ behind my “silent traps” out of paranoia but haven’t had a problem so far. The .25 pellets will chew through the wood quickly so get some duct seal and it will also be a LOT more quiet on impact. There is actually no impact sound, thus the name “silent” 😀

Hey Jim welcome. Aren’t these guns the Sh**? Tony is a Craftsman and a Gentleman.

Harry, had a chance to do a 5 shot string on a full 3000+ charge.
#1 962 fps
#2 968
#3 966
#4 966
#5 955
Avg. 963.4 fps =87.6 fpe
Would have done more, but the backstop was sending wood chips all over the place.
These numbers from the Pro Chrono in my basement.

890fps using 42.5gr in the formala is just under 75fpe 🙂 Not bad. What weight hammer did you get from Tony?

Just FYI. I have a Condor .25 that was tuned by Tony @ Talon Tunes. It was originally an Airhog .25 (so it has Airhog shroud) but the guy I bought it from sent it to Tony for an advanced $440 tune. With 2,900psi fill it gets 960-965fps with the 43gr Eun Jins which is almost 88fpe, using 42.5gr in the calculation. I have not tried 3k psi yet. I posted a 30-shot (or 40, I forgot) chrony string here a few months ago with a 2850psi fill (max was 956fps). After 30 shots it was down to ~860fps or 70fpe. That’s with the power wheel set at between 8 and 9. I haven’t touched the PW since I received it. I must admit the POI changes noticeably after shot 14-15 and then changes after every 8-10 shots or so. Probably because the pellets are heavy and have a much different trajectory than “lighter” pellets. To the contrary my .22 Condor can shoot 21gr Kodiaks with pretty much the same POI for 30 shots (30yds).

I think the inconsistency in POI every so many (few) shots with the .25 Condor, may be attributed to the recoil and the amount of air coming out (rather than velocity) which is less every so many shots. So that changes the forces on the gun and it possibly becomes “hold sensitive”. Or I could be way off, and a 50-60fps drop in velocity for a 43gr pellet means 0.2-0.3″ drop, where the lighter 21gr Kodiak only drops .05 or 0.1″. Not sure at this point..

Have fun with your new .25! (and don’t mind me), hehe.

Hey Walt, the barrel is 24 “.
The 42.5 gr EJ’s getting 890 fps, 76 fpe. That’s after 13 shots, PW on 10. Don’t know the psi at that time, but I started out with about 2900+ psi. I shot some EJ round nose, surefire 71.5 grain and Kodiaks before that, just trying it out for the first time.
Jim

how many fpe with the 42g eun jins?
This is a 24″ bbl?

aloha,
walt

I’ve tried “Photobucket” but did’nt work for me, I have Imageshack now and it is pretty simple to use.
