Q:

Confused??? Quieter when dry firing?

Lets see if any one can answer this for me. Why is my gun nearly silent
when dry fired but has decent report when shooting a pellet? I have a TSS with a a baffled frame and a GTBJ shroud. All shroud materials are solid, no
movement. Hammer slap mod, frame is not vented, Chrono’d speed is
solidly subsonic at 750 f.p.s Is the backpressure of the pellet being fired
holding the valve open longer releasing that much more air? My other
question is does the fact I seem to have a early gen valve with no brass
insert or o-ring inside for valve stem can blowby around the stem create
that much noise?

let me know when you do I would like to update my valve if the price is right. Funds are a bit low at the moment.

yeah,

id upgrade the valve eventually, thats a very early one.

i got a blod comin soon, and will likely be willing to part with a TT hi flo.

we’ll cross that bridge when we get to it, tho…

The only issue I have with the valve is its keeping the shot louder than I like
I did order a pack of 90 durometer rings for the breech

That is one of the very early valves, usually called the stealth 2000 valve in the UK, My guess is that a small amount of air is getting past the stem since I don’t think that there is an o-ring there.

Is it actually causing you a problem? If not then no real reason to fix it however if that is the problem and you want to fix it then it would not be that easy. Either machining a TINY o-ring groove in the valve body or might be worth buying a new valve. However if it isnt really causing a problem then I wouldn’t bother.

It is also recommended to upgrade the breech o-rings from the 70 durometer ones to 90

What the heck never seen anything like it

I liberally use plumber’s silicone. Is divers any different? I am trying to set the barrel back a tad in the bushings. The front bushing is pretty loose so they may have been a little far back. This results in moving the breech end of the barrel farther back. There is definitely better alignment of the breech on the barrel. I can still feel air during the firing cycle though. I think that it is because of the old style valve.

You must put diver’s “air” silicone on both o-rings to help maintain the seal.

Dave thanks for the response. Thats about what I figured and I think that is the majority of it. I put in new breech o-rings today though and I am definitely getting some leakage there as I can feel it and hear a bit of difference every once in a while though not enough to make a POI difference at 20 yards. Should I look into a new breech or see if I can find better o-rings?

Its quieter when you are dry firing because you are using less air, its a less powerful shot. This is because there is no actual pressure in the barrel holding the valve open. When there is a pellet in the barrel, and there is pressure in the barrel, the pressure is on the walls of the barrel, the skirt of the pellet and also the base of the opening in your valve stem, this holds the valve open until the pellet exits the barrel.

i dunno…my BSA .25(.243)barrel has quite a choke, and a distinct “cork pop” effect when a pellet exits, how much of that does a baffle/ mod setup reduce?

It is a used gun from one of the members here. It is currently configured in .177 with 12″ barrel. The seller told me it is one of your shrouds designed originally for a condor, I do not know if its yours for a fact but it definitely baffled in the end.. I cut it down to 18″ and run it atop 2 frame diameter aluminum baffles with thick o-rings to sandwich things down tight. I have checked and there is still enough in the frame to get correct alignment ie. no clipping. Dry fire is mouse fart quiet. I replaced breech o-rings as soon as I got it. What durometer and size is supposed to be used? The valve seems to be old. It has no brass insert or o-ring. I will try to post pics of the valve when I can. It is definitely a Talon valve as the stem and tophat are too small for the hiflow.

need some more back ground info on your setup…. caliber, barrel, and all that fun stuff

what do you mean by older valve, is it a talon or high flow?

you mentioned that you’re running one of my shrouds and baffles in the frame, are you sure it’s one of mine? I build them to run all the way to the bushing. could you post a pic or two of this set up?

have you checked your breach o-rings? they may be bad and the back pressure with a pellet in the pipe may be causing a burst of air to come out the breach. you can check that by sprinkling a wee bit of baby powder around things and shooting it, also a bic lighter next to the top hat/breach as well as the barrel/breach can tell you if it’s leaking as well
